Hello Mark, thank you.

We will be moving a mix of 100 steel and wooden cabinets into our High Density Storage facility gradually over the course of 8 months. They will be stacked three or four high, depending on space allowances throughout the facility, 70-85 inches high. So we are probably talking about 900-1200 pounds. Not an insignificant weight, placed on the bottom floor level steel shelf. Our other option, the most common, will be to have steel bracings drilled into the floor or to use two-by-fours as supports, as other places do. We have had to be creative in our distribution of the cabinets in the module as most ladders will only accommodate a depth of 36.5 inches, and most of our cabinets are deeper than that, 37.5 up to 40 inches. So we will insert most of them throughout the facility where the ladders do not have back bracing. We have been told we can stack cabinets on the floor level shelf. So I was just wondering if any other library had tried this engineering feet successfully.

Cheers,

Rudi

I once arranged about 1400 map cabinets in 7-high stacks. These were industrial steel flat files - 5 drawers, as I recall? And all on a steel base rectangle. Not sure what configuration you’re describing - high density storage facilities?

We moved and stacked them while full. Taped over drawers to prevent movement. Each cabinet was a 4-man lift. Probably 300lbs give or take.

Good morning everyone,

I was wondering if anyone out there has placed their full map cabinets on the ground level metal shelves in their high density storage facilities? If so have you had any problems with the bottom lower metal shelves being able to bear the weight or any problems with space limitations cause by placing the cabinets, generally 44 to 50 inches wide x 36 to 45 inches deep, stacked three or four units high. We will be moving the inventoried maps into the facility in the coming months, using the ladder sections that do not have back bracing. The other option is to use two by fours under the cabinets, something other libraries have done.

I have had a look at the Weight of map cabinets<http://www.waml.org/mapcabwt.html> chart found on the wonderful WAML site, so I thought it would bear asking. Just to be sure. I was told it was possible. I am not sure.

Thank you,

Rudi
