The National Library of Australia is pleased to announce the cataloguing
and digitisation of all its Australia 1:253,440 national topographic map
series sheets (4 miles to the inch).
This series began in 1942 as an emergency response to the Japanese
threat, and the almost complete lack of national topographic mapping.
The series was continued post-war, with increasing detail and under
various national or state specifications, but was replaced c.1960 by
metric 1:250,000 scale mapping.
We have individually catalogued and digitised the 340 sheets we hold
(there are several editions of some sheets), and linked the records to
each other as well as to a parent series-level record with an online
graphic index showing the extent of our holdings.

Areas not covered by the 1:253,440 series were mainly remote desert
areas and were mapped during the war at 1:506,880 (8 miles to the inch),
and later as part of the 1:250,000 national series.
The 1:506,880 series was catalogued and digitised last year.
