The GNIS database of USGS, and GNS of the NGA are very powerful tools.  On the other hand, some researchers have found reasons to use one or another of the printed gazetteers.  I think the databases are much easier to use.  They add search functionality such as search strings within a name and end-with searches, as well as begins-with capability.

 

For me the biggest drawback for these gazetteers is that our coverage is incomplete.  And usage is diminishing as the databases have become easier to use.

The Marriott Library is currently discarding or redistributing lots of decades-old government documents.  Among the candidates for withdrawal a number of older gazetteers published by the “War Department, Army Map Service, and later by Defense Mapping Agency. I can’t say I’ve used any of them for a long while, so I’m amenable to their withdrawal, but I thought I’d check with colleagues on whether there’s still a reason to keep them around.  Any comments?
