Hi, folks -
While you know I spent my time in the Map Division as an undergraduate,
that experience got me a volunteer spot to organize the incoming material
at the Cow Creek library to which I was introduced by Kathy during a field
trip to Death Valley when WAML met in Las Vegas in the mid-2000s. But, the
consequence was that, when a ranger (who knew I was a geographer by
training) was asked by a visitor, "Where's the Mickey D's here in Death
Valley NP? I can't find it in my GPS or on any maps," the ranger gave me a
ring and asked me to talk to the visitor who turned out to be a Berkeley
business school student. When I asked what his question was and he told
me, I was forced to tell him that the nearest Mickey D's was 50 miles east
on US395 in Pahrump, NV, on the other side of the state line (because
that's where I had to go to answer my email each evening). Then he wanted
to know how long it would take to get there (my answer: at least an hour
because of the police looking for speeders and an hour back to your camping
spot). I could hear a female voice in the background saying, "Honey, maybe
we should eat here."
The next day the apparent owner of the female voice delivered a note to the
ranger who passed it on to me. It was a thank you note for my "excellent
help in getting" the business student to "forgoe a trip to Pahrump". She
also mentioned that they'd had an excellent pizza in the 49er Bar about 1/2
mile south of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. The first time I EVER
heard of a substitution of a noname pizza for a Big Mac and fries with a
soda on the side!
You never know who may need to be saved from themselves!
Congratulations to y'all on WAML's 50 Years Serving the West's Librarians.

The US Naval Academy is back to teaching celestial

can't foul it up like they can GPS.
