Job Description





McMaster University Library is seeking a creative and collaborative professional to fill the newly created position of Cartographic Resources Librarian. As a member of the Library’s Distinctive Collections Division, which also includes the William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections, digitization, digital repositories, and open education and publishing, the successful candidate will be responsible for a range of activities that support and promote the University Library’s extensive collection of rare, historical, and contemporary cartographic resources. The incumbent will provide direct support to students, researchers, and community members in accessing and using the collections. They will engage in instruction and outreach activities, both individually and collaboratively, that utilize a variety of approaches and technologies appropriate to the goals and intended audience. The incumbent will also be responsible for the ongoing management of the existing collection and guiding the acquisition of both historical and modern resources for addition to the collection.







The successful candidate will:



  *   Provide both in-person and remote support for access to and use of cartographic materials by students and researchers and draw connections between cartographic resources and other University Library collections.

  *   Design and deliver instruction that incorporates cartographic and related primary resources into academic coursework and research assignments in a range of disciplines. Collaborate on instruction with colleagues in the Distinctive Collections Division and Learning Support librarians, where beneficial.

  *   Work with the Digitization Services Manager and others to plan and implement ongoing digitization of cartographic materials. Participate in multi-institutional digitization projects where these support strategic goals.

  *   Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship to support the use of cartographic and related materials for computational forms of research.

  *   Build, develop, and maintain the University Library’s cartographic and related collections. Collaborate with colleagues in the William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections in the acquisition of rare or historical materials. Support cataloguing or other appropriate description of cartographic resources.

  *   Lead and participate in outreach activities promoting the Distinctive Collections Division’s resources to McMaster students and faculty, external researchers, and the public. Work with colleagues to highlight specific holdings in support of engagement and development activities.

  *   With the Associate University Librarian and others, cultivate relationships with current and potential donors and sellers.

  *   Plan and develop digital and (where feasible) physical exhibits and digital projects that feature the University Library’s cartographic resources. Work collaboratively with colleagues in Distinctive Collections on exhibits and projects that incorporate a range of materials.

  *   Supervise the work of student assistants.

  *   Chair or serve as a member on Library and university committees, task forces, and projects aligned with position responsibilities.



This is a full time, continuous appointment reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Distinctive, Legacy, and Digital Heritage Collections. Normally scheduled weekly hours will be Monday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm (35 hours/week).







Qualifications:



The successful candidate must have the following:



  *   A Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent.

  *   Knowledge of cartographic materials in both print and electronic forms and their relationships to other library collections.

  *   Knowledge of the use of cartographic resources in research in a variety of disciplines and in digital scholarship.

  *   Knowledge of instructional methods for developing student understanding of cartographic resources and their use in a variety of disciplines.

  *   Knowledge of digitization and digital preservation of cartographic collections.







Preferred qualifications include:



  *   2 years of relevant experience.

  *   Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

  *   Knowledge of metadata and cartographic description.

  *   Knowledge of geospatial and digital cartographic methods, geospatial data, geographic information systems







Compensation:



It is anticipated that the appointment will be made at the rank of Librarian 1 or 2, with an annual salary range of $60,436.38 - $87,078.16 or $65,930.78 - $97,266.03. This position is included in the McMaster University Academic Librarians’ Association bargaining unit. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
