NOTICE OF CONFERENCE

ANZMapS 2017 – “Mastering maps, from creation to care”

The Australian & New Zealand Map Society is pleased to be offering its 45th conference, at the University of Melbourne and State Library of Victoria, Mon/Tue 22-23 May 2017.

“Mastering maps, from creation to care”, will provide an affordable, hands-on and scholarly experience, comprising one day of practicals, and one for presentations.

Day 1: Workshops/Tours

On Monday May 22, the University of Melbourne and State Library of Victoria are giving map enthusiasts, collectors and practitioners the opportunity to get close up and personal with the latest techniques in map-making, and preservation of maps.

The morning workshop is at the University of Melbourne, and will showcase practical options for using historical maps with geospatial systems. The University is providing a lab set up for a limited number of participants. Manager of the Library Map Collection David Jones, will run the 3 hour session pitched at anyone using maps in their research, publishing, collecting and business.

· It will be a practical, hands-on session using readily available software such as Google Earth Pro.

· The session will also provide participants with the opportunity to share the latest digital map projects and social media map activities.

In the afternoon, the State Library of Victoria’s Preservation & Conservation Division will provide registrants with a guide to caring for maps, books and atlases. “Map Preservation Unpacked” will be conducted by the Manager of Preservation & Conservation Shelley Jamieson, and cover topics including:

· preventive and interventive treatment approaches

· mould and pest prevention

· storage options for different map formats

· managing large format material

· book handling and display

Day 2: Papers

Tuesday May 23 is for presentations, and Brendan Whyte at the National Library will be issuing a call for papers soon. Venue will be the Victoria Room at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre on Bourke Street, near the State Library. As those of you who attended Wollongong 2016 will know, this year’s conference has been moved to the first half of the year, to bring it in to line with past conference timing, and to work better with events held by our colleagues in NZ (generally in September).
