The University of Alberta Libraries, with a long tradition of service
excellence to the University and its communities, seek a dynamic
individual to join the staff of the Libraries in the role of Rare Book &
Map Cataloguer.  Bringing a strong background in the humanities, allied
arts and sciences, and their bibliographic heritage, the successful
candidate will provide original and complex cataloguing to facilitate
and expand intellectual access to the Library's special collections,
including traditional rare books, maps, prints, manuscripts,
photographs, and book arts, as well as digital initiatives. The Rare
Book & Map Cataloguer will follow both national standards and local
practice using AACR, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21, DCRM (B), and
appropriate special collections cataloguing rules and tools as well as
describing digital content in accordance with emerging metadata schemes,
such as EAD, TEI wherever appropriate. The Rare Book & Map Cataloguer
will also participate in developing technical services policies, and
provide special collections reference and collection management services.

The University of Alberta Libraries comprise Canada's second largest
research library, with a collection exceeding six million volumes and
ten million items.  The Library has a unique relationship with the
broader community through NEOS, a central Alberta consortium consisting
of 18 government, hospital, college, and university libraries and
through The Alberta Library.  The Library has a partnership with OCLC

The Bruce Peel Special Collections Library contains more than 150,000
volumes and manuscripts, with particular strengths in Canadiana
(particularly the West), Anglo-American literature, Amer-Indian history
and culture, European history, print culture, private presses, and
artist’s books///./



Qualifications include a Masters degree in Library Science from an
accredited library school; an academic background and/or library
experience in the humanities (especially history) in addition to
interest in cataloguing, analytical/descriptive bibliography, research
methods and the ability to catalogue materials in the major western
languages; a strong service orientation; superior instructional,
communication, and writing skills; excellent information management
skills; a commitment to collegiality and seeking cooperative solutions.
An additional, advanced degree in a related field is also desirable.

This tenure-track position is classified at the Librarian I level with a
current salary range of $ 47,038 – 90,134.   Librarians at the
University of Alberta have academic status and participate in a generous
