In fact, what I suggest doing to my folks here is that they make a
"real" scan at say 300dpi or so and immediately resample that picture
to a video scan (around 75dpi) and to a thumbnail (around 30 dpi).
 
In principle, I've found that resampling the higher quality image
gives a better result than scanning at multiple densities.  I think
this is probably because you have a choice of how to do the resampling
(different filters work better on different kinds of images) and the
scanner software usually only has one filter implemented for each
kind of material that it's capable of scanning.
