Maps-L readers:

This is in response to the request for information on weeding map
collections.

A conference paper I presented, that was published in 1979, may be of
interest. The bibliographic citation follows:

Selmer, Marsha L. "A Policy for Withdrawal from the Map Collection."
Special Libraries Association, Geography and Map Division, Bulletin. no.
116 (June 1979) 2-6.

I looked at the principles formulated for book withdrawal, their
applicability to map and atlas collections, and suggested guidelines for a
map withdrawal policy. The following ten points were those most
frequently considered:

1. What is the mission of your library?
2. What is your written acquisition policy?
3. Withdrawal to storage versus withdrawal for discard
4. Withdrawal by circulation date
5. Withdrawal by publication date
6. Withdrawal by acquisition date
7. Withdrawal by "gross characteristic"
8. Withdrawal of duplicate copies no longer in demand
9. Withdrawal of superceded editions
10. Withdrawal of items that are dirty and worn
