For a small, local research project, I would like to hear from NON-ARL GIS
project MAP LIBRARIANS who have dived into the GIS slough...

Please respond to me directly at [log in to unmask]

I am interested in the software you have chosen, what kinds of maps you have
produced,[send me samples via snailmail if possible],your audience or clients,
the services and access you provide. I'll send you stuff in return--hey!!

The Map Division, NYPL, was unable to participate in the ARLGIS project. Our
staff then decided to go ahead on our own, and we have developed a public
access computer mapping workstation using ATLASGIS. In addition, we have
purchased lots of other software and CDROMs, all placed on this stand alone
machine. [No it is not on the NYPL LAN]

We have a draft policy statement on use, timelimits, printout limits, etc.

We are developing return clientele to use the machine; and networking with
local GIS folk.

Christopher Thiry is in charge of the mapping workstation, and has made it
work beautifully. Now we are even talking of a second machine to expand public
access.

I would very much like to have a feel for what is happening in MAP LIBRARIES
beyond the scope of the ARL GIS project. I suspect a lot is going on. So do
let me hear from you. I will be glad to answer any questions you have about
our work, and will try to work up a report for one of the maplibrary journals,
or maps-l, on the results of this query. Thanks in advance, Alice Hudson,
Chief, Map Division, NYPL, The Research Libraries, 5th Avenue & 42d Street,
