Hi Jim,

I agree with Joel that the monetary value is unknown. However, the map itself is probably scarce because most of these have been lost or destroyed over the years. Also, without seeing the UVa map, it’s hard to know if it is an exact duplicate, but it probably is. It is certainly worth preserving, but probably not worth a lot of money.

Monetary value is difficult to assess. Here is a similar item: <http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog/uva-lib:600043#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0&xywh=-4630%2C0%2C22579%2C16739><http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog/uva-lib:600043#?c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=0&xywh=-4630%2C0%2C22579%2C16739> .

As far as a general discussion of similar maps, see: https://www.loc.gov/rr/geogmap/pdf/plp/occasional/OccPaper7.pdf ("Maps of The First World War: An Illustrated Essay and List of Select Maps in The Library of Congress").

Here is a link to a (recent?) sale (price not shown) for a group of similar items, but that description also notes the difficulty in finding precise details: https://bostonraremaps.com/inventory/maps-of-the-end-of-the-first-world-war/ . You could contact the dealer.

Here is the description from that first link, the map held by UVa:

Hello,

I have a patron who found this World War One battlefield map in the bottom of a box of stuff he bought at a garage sale. He would like to know if it is rare and/or valuable. The base map is “Carte de France 1:600,000.” Do any of you have similar maps in your collections, or have knowledge of its value / rarity?

Thanks,

Jim
