Summary of Position

The University of New Hampshire Library seeks a creative, innovative and dynamic specialist librarian to join our team and support research and instruction in geospatial information and earth sciences. The Geospatial and Earth Sciences Librarian will lead efforts to acquire, provide access to and services for geospatial information and data resources, including geographic information system (GIS) and maps in all formats.



UNH is a public land-, sea-, and space-grant institution with emphases on undergraduate and graduate research and state-wide STEM education initiatives. As liaison to the Department of Earth Sciences and other assigned subject areas, this position will develop and deliver responsive reference, research and instructional support, develop and manage library collections and work with teaching and research faculty and other liaison librarians. Working both independently and collaboratively, the Geospatial and Earth Sciences Librarian will support the library's Geospatial Services Center, natural sciences and scholarly communication initiatives with special focus on liaison areas.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

Required

-ALA-accredited Master's degree in library and information science.

-Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with geospatial data and relevant software, such as ESRI ArcGIS applications, Open GIS, etc.

-Knowledge of maps and cartography

-Familiarity with scientific and statistical information resources and user needs

- Knowledge of scientific communication and the research process

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

-Minimum two years of experience; may include combination of library experience, teaching, scientific research or GIS support

-Strong academic or experiential background in scientific information sources and scholarly communication in the earth sciences, geography, and/or allied areas.

-Working knowledge of indexing/cataloging standards for cartographic resources and metadata standards for geospatial data

-Familiarity with one or more standard statistical software programs such as SAS, STATA, or SPSS

-Knowledge of earth science literature and data resources, particularly those produced by the U.S. Geological Survey and other government agencies

-Experience with providing science reference and/or instructional services

Oversee all aspects of the UNH Library map and geospatial collections and services, including:

 Provide in-depth reference services for maps and geospatial information via referral by other library staff or direct patron contact.

 Working with teaching and research faculty, oversee the library's Geospatial Services Center (GSC), train and supervise interns, and develop and assess services; may include scheduled hours in the GSC. Adapt GSC services to meet changing campus needs.

 Develop and manage collections and services for maps, imagery and cartographic information in all formats and produced by both government and other sources. The collection includes print maps, geospatial and related data, GIS software, and maps digitized or created in the library. Maintain awareness of and provide access to sources of digital maps and geospatial data on the Internet.

 Provide leadership to build and enhance the library's digital collections of scanned maps and related materials.

 Participate in current Institute of Museum and Library Services PLACE grant activities (through October 2017). The PLACE project develops an instance of the Open Geoportal that connects to the library's Fedora-based digital collections. Provide leadership in seeking grant or other support for expansion of PLACE to include additional collections.

 Work with the Data Curation Librarian and the Business & Data Librarian to coordinate acquisition of geospatial data with other forms of numeric data.

 Train students and other library staff in specialized map maintenance tasks and basic cartographic reference.

 Determine and document map and geospatial policies and procedures.

 Work with the Cataloging and Metadata Unit to resolve map cataloging issues.

 Actively promote maps and geospatial data collections and services on campus and beyond.





Serve as Earth Sciences Librarian, including:

 Support all levels of research and education in the earth sciences; as liaison to the Department of Earth Sciences and other areas as assigned, actively engage faculty, students and staff, developing strong working relationships and partnerships.

 Direct and provide reference services for liaison subject areas to students, faculty, staff, other researchers, and the general public; seek and develop effective and innovative content and communication strategies for reference service.

 Promote awareness and knowledge of relevant information resources and services; create online and digital content with existing and emerging tools and technologies.

 Lead the development and management of the library's collections in the earth sciences and other liaison areas in all formats; collaborate on service to interdisciplinary fields such as water resources, environmental studies, sustainability and marine sciences.

 Continue projects for digitization of geologic field trip guidebooks.

 In collaboration with other science librarians, advocate for and contribute to library and university support of scientific research and instruction; communicate with UNH Library faculty and staff concerning developments in scientific scholarly communication.

 Work with library colleagues to support scholarly communication initiatives and newly emerging modes of research, such as e-science; educate and inform those in liaison areas about relevant developments in scholarly communication and library initiatives.





Support the library's instruction program, including:

 Work with teaching faculty and other librarians to integrate cartographic and GIS information with UNH curricular needs.

 Collaborate with the Instruction Librarian and other librarians to develop and deliver library instruction (for library staff, other faculty and staff, students and the public) in maps, geospatial information and earth science and other liaison disciplines.

 Create user guides and other instructional materials in appropriate formats.





Other duties

 Participate actively in library and unit governance and library committees; serve on campus and professional committees as appropriate.

 Represent the UNH Library in relevant campus, regional and national initiatives.
