Hi,

A patron of mine wants the area in sq. miles of western and southern European countries circa 1871
(i.e., "after German and Italian reunification"). Our 1905 edition of Lippincott's New Gazetteer has
that info, and there are editions of that title from the 1870s in several local libraries.
Theoretically, then, the patron could get her info from a few phone calls.

But are old gazetteers the best source for that kind of info? And given the volatility of 19th
century Europe, should any resource's info be taken with more or fewer grains of salt that any other?

Thanks very much for any advice/counsel you can provide.

mf
