SYMPOSIUM ON CARTOGRAPHIC DESIGN AND RESEARCH

                         Ottawa, Ontario

                        7 - 8 August 1994

                    PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
                               and
                  C A L L F O R P A P E R S

The SYMPOSIUM ON CARTOGRAPHIC DESIGN AND RESEARCH will be a two-day
event sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Geomatics and
dedicated to re-establishing the importance of cartographic design
and research. During the last several years, map design and map
design research, in particular, seem to have been relegated to a
somewhat neglected status. Here's what some leading cartographers
have said recently:

Borden D. Dent, Georgia State University, author of
Cartography: Thematic Map Design, 3rd edition: "I tend to agree
that design has fallen somewhat into neglect -- for reasons I'm not
totally certain..."

Jacqueline M. Anderson, Concordia University: "Today, map
design and map design research appear to receive little attention
both at conferences and in some of the cartographic journals."

On the idea of having a map design symposium:

Robert B. McMaster, University of Minnesota: "...a good idea."
Judy M. Olson, Michigan State University: "Interested, yes."
Barbara P. Buttenfield, SUNY-Buffalo: "...sounds interesting."
     D. R. Fraser Taylor, Carleton University: "...the idea is a
          good one..."
Michael Wood, Aberdeen University: "...great. Count me in..."
Patricia Gilmartin, University of So. Carolina: "...idea
          sounds great..."
Janet Mersey, Guelph University: "...interested in
          participating..."
Carolyn C. Weiss, Statistics Canada: "...very interested in
          participating..."

This SYMPOSIUM, it is hoped, will serve as a vehicle to bring
together persons interested in redefining the role and the
direction that cartographic design and cartographic design research
must take in the age of information, automation, and geographic
information systems. The SYMPOSIUM will be scheduled in
conjunction with a joint meeting of the Canadian Cartographic
Association (CCA) and the North American Cartographic Information
Society (NACIS). JOIN US FOR A FULL WEEK OF STIMULATING
