  *AGSL GRADUATE INTERN JOB DESCRIPTION*

_Title_: Map Cataloging Intern

_Position Summary:_ This position supports the UWM research and teaching
mission by making available in PantherCat (the library’s online catalog)
cartographic research materials in English and foreign languages through
the effective and efficient cataloging and classification of those
materials and through the maintenance of bibliographic authority records.

_Job Duties_

The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) Map Cataloging Intern
is a graduate student member of the AGSL Department. The position serves
under the primary supervision of the Catalog Librarian.

(85%) The Cataloging Intern works along side professional librarians in
the AGSL. Intern will:

   1. Learn to catalog maps and other cartographic materials as assigned
   2. Learn to classify and accession cartographic print resources using
      the AGS Classification System.
   3. Learn effective use of a wide variety of print resources and
      specialized databases relating to cataloging
   4. Adhere to published policies, procedures, and guidelines for
      student employees of the UWM Libraries
   5. Keep monthly statistics related to cartographic materials cataloging

(15%) The AGSL Cataloging Intern completes special assignments and
projects. Examples:

   1. Create library guides and handouts
   2. Participate in collection evaluation
   3. Assist with maintenance of the collection
   4. Assist with maintenance of the AGSL and assist with basic
      maintenance of standard office equipment
   5. Provide basic reference services
   6. Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.


  Knowledge, skills, and abilities


  Required

   1. Demonstrated excellent English language skills (both speech and
      comprehension), and the ability to communicate effectively
      in-person, on the telephone, and in writing (both manually and
      with a keyboard).
   2. Evidence of being able to fulfill duties and responsibilities with
      a limited amount of direct supervision (after appropriate
      training) and complete assigned projects in a timely manner.
   3. Strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to
      effectively interact with patrons and staff in a positive and
      professional manner.
   4. Ability to perform work in a multi-task environment, prioritizing
      needs for efficient and effective service.
   5. Demonstrated ability to adapt and learn both printed and
      computer-based resources.
   6. Dependability, a sense of responsibility, reliability.
   7. Accuracy of work and attention to detail.
   8. Willingness to learn and follow stated policies and procedures.


  Desired

   1. Knowledge of the national and international cataloging standards
   2. Prior experience cataloging in an online environment
   3. Prior experience in the use of online catalogs and library databases.
   4. Microcomputer skills, including word processing and databases.
   5. Prior experience with E-Mail.
   6. Prior experience using the Internet for research.


          Academic Requirements/Student Status

Applicants must:

1. Provide proof of acceptance into the UWM SOIS MLIS program.

2. Have completed LI&SCI-531 *or *have proof of enrollment in LI&SCI-531
(or equivalent) during the first semester of the Internship period (Fall
2006)

3. Register for credit-granting UWM courses during the Fall 2006 and
Spring 2007 semesters and

remain enrolled through the end of the Internship period (August 2007)
to maintain student worker status.

4. Be available to work during the AGSL’s open hours – Monday through
Friday from 8:00am until 4:30 for 15-20 hours per week throughout the
Internship period.


          Work Environment

Intern will spend the majority of work hours at a computer in the AGSL.
To carry out duties and responsibilities, intern must be able to sit for
extended periods, travel to conduct research cataloging questions in the
AGS Library and AGS Library stacks, travel to other departments within
the library, and write legibly. Intern must be able and willing to
assist with processing of maps within the collection including
occasional shelving, shelf reading, and shifting of print resources, and
must be able to move a full book cart and lift 25 pounds. Intern must be
willing and able to assist with general maintenance of and assistance
with standard office equipment. Intern must be able to use a standard
keyboard for extended periods and telephone on occasion.


          Equipment Used to Perform Essential Job Functions

Personal computer – standard keyboard and monitor; printers; photocopy
machines; telephone; basic office equipment.


          Training

Interns will receive detailed and ongoing training. Interns work closely
with AGSL librarians and staff for on-the-job learning. Additionally,
informational sessions will be held one-on-one with the AGSL librarians
and staff throughout the year to learn more about specific job
responsibilities and subject areas of expertise. Special projects will
be done under the supervision of an AGSL librarian or staff member.


          Supervisor/Evaluation

The Intern works under the general direction of the Cartographic
Materials Catalog Librarian and under the direct guidance of the
librarian or staff on duty at the AGSL. Special projects are done under
the supervision of a designated AGSL librarian or staff member. The
Intern will be formally evaluated no less than two times in the
Internship year and will receive both written and oral feedback. A
positive evaluation is required to continue with the Internship.


          Hours

Interns work approximately 15-20 hours per week for one year. The work
plan is flexible and will accommodate most SOIS class schedules. Every
effort will be made to accommodate individual scheduling requests.


          Salary

$9.00/hour.
