Subject: Re: WHAT ARE THE LARGEST UNIVERSITY MAP COLLECTIONS IN THE
U.S.?

As I believe the original poster was interested in holdings of maps,
I've taken the ARL list and added a column for the number of maps in
those collections based on the 4th edition of the IFLA directory. I
have not reordered the list because too many collections apparently did
not respond to IFLA's questionnaire, and thus, did not get included in
the directory.

I would also add, for the record, that the number of maps in the AGS
Collection, according to the directory, was 481,000. I could also add
that we've just taken on the holdings of the old UWM map library, which
may number around 150,000. I would, however, not wish to hazard a
guess as to what the yield of this acquisition will be once the
duplication is eliminated. For those not familiar, the AGS Collection
is at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It was not included in
the ARL list for the simple reason that its parent library system is
not a member of ARL.

An additional two things should be kept in mind--Many of the larger
University map collections are not on this list, and almost all map
holdings statistics must be taken _cum grano salis_.
