Subject: Re: Serial Set Maps project <fwd>

My suggestion would be to remove the maps from the Serial
Set but to keep them together as a set and retain the
serial set numbering (plus whatever workmarks are needed to
distinguish one sheet from another, e.g., 11885 map, or map
1, map 2, etc. The catalog and Donna's excellent index to
maps in the Serial Set would provide satisfactory access.
This is what Berkeley's Earth Sciences & Map Library and
Stanford's Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections
do when encountering maps that need to be removed from
volumes for conservation reasons. They retain the call
number of the book or journal but are filed flat in map
cases. Notes on the pieces and in the bibliographic record
tie the map and work from which it was removed together.
This system seems to work pretty well and saves a lot of
classification time.
