I received an email from the original poster detailing the confusion.
He used the European way of dating which is date/month/year instead of
month/date/year as in the United States. Just a bit of cultural
difference, that's all. I am from Honduras and we use date/month/year
as well, but I have lived in the U.S. for so long that I've gotten used
to its cultural norms.

The Jan 5 date appears to be incorrect - see the Society's
Essay page at http://www.sochistdisc.org/essay-contest.htm which
indicates that entries must be postmarked by May 1, 2005
