Hi Jordan,

Since you have a copyright date but no date of publication, here is what RDA says:

Date of Publication Not Identified in a Single-Part Manifestation
If a date of publication is not identified in a single-part manifestation, supply the date or approximate date of publication (see 1.9.2).

EXAMPLE
[2004?]
Date supplied based on statement in colophon: Dépôt légal: octobre 2004, No 41576-2 (073109)

If an approximate date of publication for a single-part manifestation cannot reasonably be determined, record date of publication not identified. Indicate that the information was taken from a source outside the manifestation itself (see 2.2.4).

2.2.4 says: When instructions specify transcription, indicate that the information is supplied from a source outside the manifestation itself:
by means of a note (see 2.17)
or
by some other means (e.g., through coding or the use of square brackets).

Following this guidance, I would record the date of publication as [2017?] - or earlier, depending on when your library actually received the item.

Hope this helps!

Louise

Subject: Copyright date in the future: how to handle 264s?

Hi all,

I have a number of MapArt/Canadian Cartographics Corporation maps in hand, ordered at the very beginning of the year, that all read ©2018. I can and will put that in 264 _4. What are the rules for handling obviously impossible publications dates in 264 _1? This isn't necessarily a map-specific cataloguing question, but it would be good to know!

Thanks,
Jordan
