Interesting, but I think maybe the Slate writer just needed something to
write about and is being too generous with this map. The map doesn't
look much different than the usual to me. Isn't it a Miller projection?
The equator is still well below the half-way parallel on the map and the
northern latitude land masses look pretty big.

The big difference is that it's centered differently and is shaded in a
monotone instead of having brightly colored political entities, all
serving to make the Middle East and Africa look more ominous and the US
more puny and defenseless. In this context, it neither "successfully
conveys a message of international community" nor offers a remedy from
"cartoonish egocentrism" anymore than the US-centered Mercator.
