Subject: GIS printers

I am planning to request a 36" color printer/plotter for my GIS
workstation, and am curious what models others have been purchasing, what
accessories they have ordered, and how satisfied they are with what they
have bought.

Hewlett Packard DesignJet printers seem to have a near monopoly in
this area. I know that some libraries have purchased the DesignJet HP
1055CM, which has been recommended by the GPO. That is their top of the
line model, and it costs about $9500. HP makes a lot of other models,
including the HP 430, which also prints in color on paper 36" wide, and
costs around $2500. It is not obvious to me from reading the
specifications why the 1055CM is worth $7000 more. Any thoughts on this
subject? Has anybody had positive experiences with wide-format printers
from other manufacturers?
