*Keynote Speaker—Michael Blanding—Author of “The Map Thief” *

Michael Blanding is a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute of
Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University. His latest book, */The
Map Thief: The Gripping Story of an Esteemed Rare-Map Dealer Who Made
Millions Stealing Priceless Maps/*
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.michaelblanding.com_mapthief&d=DwMD-g&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=VU6SrAQn0X87INXLVGYMXHM8JnhTcdMf22vg1mfTc20&m=98QWPy7jpG0PwgWW9X1-8RLzavOZqvl44N0YHFh35wE&s=xpXv1WE9AnX9pqjsu0GQksWoIQizc_Fx87UDNSldjZM&e=>,
has been named a /New York Times/ bestseller, an NPR Book of the Year, a
New England Society Book Award winner, and a finalist for the Chautauqua
Prize and the Massachusetts Book Awards. In /The Map Thief/, Michael
Blanding tells the true-life story of a map dealer–turned-criminal E.
Forbes Smiley III, who stole more than $3 million worth of antique maps
from rare-book libraries around the country. In addition to talking
about Smiley’s thefts, Blanding will also talk about the security and
legal issues that emerged from this case.

*How to Create and/or Supplement your Security Manual*

*Salvatore Caputo, Assistant Director for Security and Operations,
University of Pennsylvania Libraries*

Does your Policies and Procedures manual address the security concerns
that are important to your library?

Receive an overview of what policies and procedures should be considered
for your security manual. Resources are made available for starting or
completing your manual.

*Balancing Access and Security in Library Special Collections*

*Peggy Schaller—* *President of Collections Research for Museums,
Denver, Colorado*

Policies and Procedures for researcher access to Library Special
Collections are critical components to striking a balance between
preservation and access. Libraries hold Special Collections materials
that are unique and hold valuable information for future generations.
Libraries are in the business of protecting these collections, but they
are also in the business of making these collections available to the
public. This session will discuss the various elements to consider in
putting together viable policies and procedures for access to these
types of collections.

*The Philosophy of Fire Protection**__*

*Nick Artim, The Heritage Protection Group*

Effective fire protection is a multiple faceted discipline that
encompasses fire prevention/risk management, fire detection and alarm,
emergency evacuation, isolating the fire size, fire extinguishment, and
emergency recovery. This session will review how fires can occur and
spread within a building, and then describe how the various elements of
fire safety interact to minimize potential harm.

*Emergency Planning**__*

*Eileen Brady, CIPM, CIPMII, Professor Emeritus, Washington State
University Libraries, Pullman, WA.*

A forty-five year career in libraries has given the speaker personal
experience with evacuations, fire, flood, problem patrons, structure
failures, thefts, and vandalism. Based on these, she offers suggestions
on writing, testing, and refining guidelines and/or procedures for
various types of events; training staff and getting their buy-in; and
dealing with co-workers who feel that “it can’t happen here.”

*Safe Handling of Special Collection Material*

*Christine McCarthy, Chief Conservator and Tara Kennedy, Preservation
Services Librarian, Yale University Libraries*

In order to ensure the safety of your collections while being used by
patrons, Librarians should be familiar with proper handling for all
types of material within their collection. Preservation and Conservation
experts from Yale University Libraries demonstrate proper handling of
many types of collection material and provide a handling guide for class
participants.

*Performing a Security Audit on your Reading Room*

*Michael Bell—****Associate University Librarian for IT and
Administrative Services, Yale University Libraries.***

Review a tested audit process for Special Collection Reading Rooms,
including an audit checklist that can be used to gather important
information about your facility, determine your strengths and weaknesses
and assess how to follow up with security recommendations. Hear lessons
learned from extensive audits conducted at many different types of
libraries and hear about the importance of taking an honest look at your
security vulnerabilities

*Why people steal from Special Collection Libraries, how to recognize it
and what we can do to prevent it*.

*Lynn Ieronimo, Head of Security, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library, Yale University*

There’s more than one reason why people may steal from your facility. A
discussion about how to protect all your material, not just the most
valuable, what constitutes suspicious behavior and how to protect your
facility against patron/staff theft and vandalism.

*How to plan for and maintain security during a construction
project*—/panel discussion/

*Panel Members*: *Peter Yacono—*Security Supervisor, Yale Center for
British Art; *John Pfannenbecker*—Chief of Security and *Frank
Biceglia*—Security Manager, Yale University Art Gallery; *Jamie Harris*,
Asst. Head of Security, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library; *Tom
Giola*, Vice President, Standard Builders Construction*__*

You are never more vulnerable than when your facility is under
construction, whether the project is small or large.

Learn how to plan for your construction project, maintain high security
during construction and come out at the end of the project with what you
want and need. Hear from security experts that have successfully
managed security throughout multiple complicated and intrusive
construction projects. Question and answer period provided.
