Hi Anne,

The sheets of Bamako you found were just that: of Bamako only.

I am unaware of any French or Malian 1:100,000 or 1:50,000 mapping of the area.

The only other mapping for such a remote area is the French 1:200,000 series (Djenne is on D30-viii)

This is not a direct answer to your question about what else might be

for Bamako. I'm attaching the relevant pages for Mali from my two favorite

My institution has a large number of maps stored at an offsite facility, and we are working on a project with the storage facility to perform reference-level imaging of the maps, as well as a condition assessment (most of the maps were moved there in the 1990s and have remained there ever since). Does anyone have a guide that they work from, or developed one yourself, for determining the map's condition? We are ok with them judging on a fairly simple Good/Fair/Poor scale, but I'd love to give them specific examples for what would fall under each category,

Does anyone in the Maps-L community have these type of map cabinets and how much they weigh empty? The map collection are our institution needs to be moved and we have to calculate weight bearing loads.

Any information about weights of these cabinets will help!

We have three models our collection
[1] 46” wide x 34” deep x 19 " high. 10 drawers. Steel.

Good afternoon Rosa,

While this isn’t specific to those particular cabinets, I wondered if you already came across this table from WAML https://waml.org/resources/toolbox/operations/map-cabinet-weight/

I am sending positive energy with the move!

A Map Librarian on the Road: Four Libraries in Four Days

In June 2025, Map Librarian Kathleen Weessies set out on a week-long journey to four academic map collections with a focused goal: to compare holdings of select international topographic map sets. But the trip quickly became more than a data-gathering mission. By approaching each collection as a researcher, Kathleen experienced firsthand the nuances of access, service, and user experience.

I have never used any online scale calculator during my days of cataloging so I cannot answer your question Craig. However, others on the list could/should chime in as I'd be interested to know the answer to that question too!

My only thought is this: like so many other tools that went from handheld to being developed as an online version one loses the ability to understand what is happening "behind the scenes". Another way to put it is this, any online calculator can give you an answer but for most people that's all they get and all they care

Maps of London ca. 1462?

Folks, I have a request from some colleagues who are collaborating on a digital humanities project focused on the year 1462. The beta for the project is London. And, funding permitting, additional phases focused on Milan and Paris in order to create a triangulation around these 3 metropolitan areas during 1462.
Perhaps the cartophile community can point us toward early cartography of these cities, starting with London. Maybe they've been reproduced in historical atlases.
Any leads welcome.

I am aware of a 1905 Sanborn Fire Insurance map for Ciudad Juarez. It is just a single sheet. We have a copy we digitized at the Library of Congress. I don’t know if they have made it available on their website or not.

There is a Sanborn Fire Insurance Map publication from 1868 done before the fire, and Rascher insurance maps which were done afterwards. The Levanthal Center at the Boston Public Library has the 1868 Sanborn online:

I highly recommend visiting the library at the Chicago History Museum for more Rascher and Sanborn maps. I believe the University of Illinois in Champaign has a set of 1870s era Rascher maps if the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections as well.

Good morning Maps-L!

While researching Africa maps for a patron, my co-worker and I found an 1844 LOC map that labeled the area that is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a "desert". Here is the link<https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3200m.gcws0193/?sp=76&r=-0.13,-0.06,1.441,0.868,0>.

There are other maps from the 1800s that label the area as varying forms of "terra incognita", but I was intrigued by the "desert" designation. I have a vague recollection that cartographers would sometimes label unexplored areas as "deserts", but I can't remember the source of that idea.

I found a few isolated examples for the East Coast, but has there been
no systematic effort to create vectors of the Enumeration District maps
from pre-1960 censuses?

It feels like it would be worth the effort to re-compile some spatial
micro-data based on the now published rolls. Even just counting the
number of lines (ie: people) would give more granular population density
than what is otherwise available. As for demographics: before the
country was completely tracted, race/ethnic/foreign born tabulations
really only exist for counties, MMSA's, and big cities.

Yes! We created ED vector maps for Minneapolis and St. Paul in order to map
populations of color in 1910-1940

It also looks like NARA has compiled a searchable database of digitized ED

Jon,

I worked on a grant funded project to proof of concept digitizing the 1940

faced: (1) the physical maps seem to be gone, we had to rely on NARA
microfilm and when the photography for that microfilm was done they did not
flatten the maps, (2) in attempting to align the EDs as drawn on the maps
to what was recorded in the written descriptions we found discrepancies -
so which one is the "authoritative" record, (3) we just didn't have enough

I know the National Archives building in College Park, MD has quite a few of the enumeration maps from 1940 and 1950 - I was able to use them to locate some CDPs that Census created in the early 1940s.  The CDPs were listed in a separate volume and were not an 'official' part of the 1940 census reports.

All,

Since moving to Colorado in 1995, I have been keenly interested in Trails Illustrated maps. Being a hiker, I love the maps. Based here in Colorado, Trails Illustrated has been one of the most important and consequential mapping companies in the state’s history. Being a map librarian, I have collected the Trails Illustrated maps because they meet the needs of our patrons. Being a map cataloger, I have reveled in puzzling out how to catalog Trails Illustrated maps properly. Through my years of experience and interactions with the staff at Trails Illustrated, here are some things to help guide

Chris,

THANK YOU for sharing these numbering/dating clues with the community, I have a feeling that the PSU map catalogers probably mis-dated some of these over the years as well. We didn't have the in-depth knowledge that you got from the company to go by. I am forwarding this message on to the lone map cataloger at PSU, his supervisor, and the couple of "helper catalogers" who work on cataloging maps occasionally so that they have it for future reference (I know Steve will incorporate into documentation as well).

All,

Trail Illustrated/National Geographic Maps (NOT the Society) closed their office in Evergreen to go to remote work. The head cartographer, David Lambert, reached out to me & asked if we wanted some maps. Through a series of conversations, I was able to acquire their entire reference collection (mostly hiking maps) and 1 copy of everything Trail Illustrated/National Geographic Maps produces including the National Geographic atlases. I estimate we acquired over 200 books & atlases, and 2,000 maps.

We (MapQuest) produced some of those NatGeo atlases back in the day. The
Adventure Edition road atlas has used the same cover image for the past 20+
years. I assume the maps are updated? If you need assistance with

Hi Lisa,

Our nautical chart collection is largely unused and finding maps can be challenging. Though we do have a chart on display showing a body of water that has undergone a name change recently.

I use this site to find sheet number and, in this case, it gives the map numbers with a way to purchase as they can't viewed per NGA rules. This commercial site might be easier to use than the book you have been using.

Navigating deaccession and disposal of maps

Hello MAPS-L!

I am seeking guidance on how other institutions manage disposal with their map collections, everything from weeded duplicates and superseded materials to donations out of scope. Any look at formal policies or workflows is wonderful, but also appreciative of just a quick ‘here’s what we do’ note if you have the time. My department is working on revising a deaccession policy and I’m navigating articulating our disposal options. I’d particularly love to hear from anyone who has had ‘free to a good home’ maps (or, if this practice has phased out for your institution, would love to hear

Hello Laura,

Our institute will just be starting a weeding and de-duping project, so unfortunately, we don't yet have any ideas yet
However, are there any GPO experts here?
We have a lot of duplicate copies of USGS maps, but these were NOT given to us via USGPO, but rather through faculty clean out of offices or random donations, or as people left the institute. We were just accumulating and taking them and adding them to our collection.

Hello,

If there is a paper copy remaining in the Libraries, you do not need to offer the topo maps. Also, the topo maps supersede, so you don't need to offer older additions if there is a more recent print edition in the Libraries. I don't have any good advice for how to dispose of them. (I get offers from other libraries or private individuals several times a year and always turn them away.) Most libraries are downsizing and the best I can do is suggest they make great wrapping paper. More on disposal below.

Hello Laura,

We also receive many duplicate maps from other departments when they are cleaning out their spaces. Once we have verified that they are indeed duplicates, we stamp them as "Withdrawn" and put them in a clearly marked giveaway pile. It is very popular with students, staff, and faculty, and the maps get a second life when they are used for art projects, wrapping paper, or wall decorations. A much better option than having them sit in a landfill. When patrons come to peruse the giveaway maps, we simply check for the withdrawn stamp before they take the maps

Hi Laura,

I've seen a mix of 'free material' tables inside or outside the library front doors; student/volunteer-run discarded item shops (UCLA had a great one I used to haunt, as did the WA state library in Perth); and (per Kathy's comments) staff secretly binning items into locked bins to avoid public scrutiny/scandal... although the latter tends to make reputational issues even worse if/once it comes to light. Honest, open accountability is always preferable IMO, especially for any state-funded institution.

Hello Sara,

In 2019, we had pretty good results using Backstage Library Works to catalog hundreds of maps. Our in-house catalogers didn't agree with how Backstage cataloged a small percentage of the maps, but overall Backstage was good to work with.

Jeff, the maps are from a donor who currently lives in Colorado but is from Tennessee and is a Davidson alum. In addition to rare Colorado and Tennessee maps, he has a large collection of early American maps, Western exploration, and those depicting sea creatures. Hi Caroline!

Besides Susan's excellent response (and the first resource I also though of) in I believe Appendix B of Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 is a table with some uncommon scale types that might prove useful in some instances. But Jan's resource was by far the most comprehensive covering early/unusual scale types from around the world, including the many versions of "mile".

Proquest discontinued the GeoTIFF service at the end of June, 2020. The
primary reason given, IIRC, was that the site didn't meet accessibility
standards and it wasn't worth their investment to revamp it. At the time,
I was interested in discussing an alternative arrangement for access to the
GeoTIFFs, but that never really got any traction with the Proquest people
unfortunately. I have no idea whether they still have them archived.

It's an index for a series of Otto Roach Photography oblique aerial images

Thank you Michael -- I had not seen this document before!

We'll probably go with Camera Station or Exposure Point in our finding aid.
Maybe we'll reference both. The 'Point' makes more sense since 'Station'
sounds like a semi-permanent structure.

Thanks!

Hello Colleagues,

I am very new to maps and still learning how to best steward our collection. I have a question about print nautical navigation maps. I think current maps can be found on the NOAA site - https://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/. In our current climate, if the maps are online, I wonder if they will stay there. The librarian who managed the map collection before me mentioned that she stopped collecting print navigation maps. Personally, I might keep things are related to our area - Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana - and the rivers around us.

Amy,

Years ago, I would take map donations and let them know that I would go
through and pull out ones we wanted to keep, and sell the rest at our
annual book sale. In reality, unless something stood out as a keeper, I
spent very little time and effort looking through them. A few sold at the
book sale, but having a stack of maps there is kind of messy. All book
sale items that didn't sell were then put up for sale at university
surplus. I think they were pricing boxes of books and whatever else,
including maps,

It's a good idea to retain charts for your area.

If NOAA is no longer sending print charts, then it's important to print out
the charts for your area.

Patrons using printed maps will be able to see the map all at once...
something you can't do with a pdf version. Same thing with topographic
maps.

As for promoting use through the news, we have a nautical chart of the Gulf of Mexico (as printed on the map.)

We get less than one question per year about nautical charts, which is higher than the print superseded topographic maps of states other than Pennsylvania in print. I normally use TopoView for patron questions for topographic maps. I do get patrons wanting the printed topos of PA even if they are superseded.

A local historian reached out to me recently to see if I could date a collection of aerial photos of Matthies Memorial Park (CT) from Fairchild Aerial Surveys. The only info he has are the labels on the top right of the photograph. I'm still relatively new to map librarianship and am not sure what might exist out there for finding this information when it's not included with the item/collection itself, especially since Fairchild is long out of business.

Hello Katie.

UC Santa Barbara has a large collection of Fairchild aerial photography. Fairchild used a numerical code for each flight they did which got progressively higher over time. Assuming that the flight code of 1560 is part of the same numbering system, that flight should have been taken circa 1931. In the UCSB collection, Fairchild flights 1540 through 1600 were all flown in May of 1931.

Hi Katie,

My educatated guess is that this is the 95th frame of Flight #3550. If you have other images you would notice a pattern. For example, if 3550 is on all photos or there is a 96, 97 and so on.

Also, your surname caught me off guard at first because “fiducial marks” are a set of marks located in the corners, edge-centers, or both of an aerial photographic image. These marks are exposed within the camera onto the original film and are used to define the frame of reference for spatial measurements on aerial photographs. Perhaps useful for

What's throwing me on this photo is that most of our Fairchild imagery is
vertical, and not oblique like this one, and the flight numbers begin with
either C or NY to indicate the California or New York office. So I'm not

3550 and frame 95.

All,

I have 168,000+ air photos of Colorado dating from the 1930s to early 2000s. I would love to scan various sets of these photos & mash them into 1 orthophoto layer per set (so a single layer containing the 1938 set of photos of my area).

I work in ArcPRO for desktop. I have found a few tutorials but they don't seem to fit my situation. Most tutorials deal with more modern data taken by satellites or by airplanes and have a large amount of associated metadata.

we need to include examples of satellite imagery as well. If people could

I went to SLA in San Francisco in 1992. I remember Jim Minton & Johnnie Sutherland buying me a drink and talking to me about being a map librarian. They also wondered who this "punk kid" was who was trying to get in on the profession. Good times 🙂

This news is so sad, I found out about it through a long-time colleague just yesterday. At first I thought it might be a hoax. Like you Chris I remember my first SLA annual conference, it was in Pittsburgh I believe around 1987 or 1988 and it was Johnnie Sutherland who encouraged me to attend (I was at my first job, University of Georgia, where Johnnie was the long-time maps curator) and introduced me to a number of people who were "big names" in map librarianship such as Mary Larsgaard, Jim Minton, David Cobb and Gary North. Hi all,

I'm currently going through our atlas collection, as many of them are in
bad shape or simply very out of date.

However, trying to find appropriate replacements is proving difficult,
especially from international publishing houses that no longer exist (I'm
based in the US). Do y'all have suggestions for where to look for atlases?
I've searched for the publishers and been going into WorldCat to see what's
out there with similar subject tags, but finding things published
relatively recently has proven challenging.

Hi sam,
I've used GeoCenter <https://www.ilh-geocenter.de/> for years. Shipping can
be pricey from Europe, so it depends on which atlases you're looking for
and if that's the best source. Their weekly email updates are also good for
keeping track of new atlases coming out, too. Like some other outlets,
they're also good with map series from national mapping agencies.

I'm currently brainstorming some map collection-based ideas for little social media videos (Instagram/Facebook). I have a few ideas, but I was interested if anyone else could share their experience promoting/teaching/doing silly things in their map collections.

I've looked at some other institutions' social media, including Milwaukee Public Library, LA Public Library, and Denver Public Library for inspiration. If you have any insight or suggestions, please let me know! Some ideas I'm working with right now:

Many years ago I used to frame up a map every Monday in the library
elevator foyer with "Maps in the News"--I'd scour the news for something a
map/location could be worked in, find a physical map (this was at
TTU--there was a large collection from which to draw from) and write up
something from the story. This was a physical thing, predating what social
media has morphed into. You might be able to do this for Cleveland
locations from the maps you have?

The tattoo art idea sounds like it could very easily be an exhibit or
article!! If CPL has the space, it might be a good outreach opportunity to
have an exhibit to combine with social media.

I'm still working on what to do for our collection's social media presence

stories. They post four maps and users have to guess based on context clues
which movie the maps reference. It's pretty fun!

Hi Lisa,

While I have never had the pleasure of visiting Cleveland and therefore
can't give you any super specific ideas, I always like leaning into local
history along with that which makes your city/library/collection unique. I
find that the city (Los Angeles in my case) provides most of the stories,
and the maps just help illustrate them. Sanborns are a goldmine of
interesting stories about places and neighborhoods that have changed over
time, as well as famous locations, and places where notable folks may have
lived or worked. Railroad maps, shipping routes, old transportation
systems, and early road maps

I used to post place-name stuff on the Nat Geo library's Twitter
account. It was kinda laborious, but loads of fun to dig up names, research
'em, find good imagery, and try to tell a story in 280 characters. A few
examples:

https://x.com/NatGeoLibrary/status/1151151009563119617

https://x.com/NatGeoLibrary/status/1044663129781809152

https://x.com/NatGeoLibrary/status/1052209013209923584

Think you could easily do the same for a specific place (e.g., Cleveland),
if perhaps not weekly!

Lisa,
Sorry for the late reply.  At the Univ. of Maryland library, we  were given four display cabinets in the 4th floor hallway to use for map displays.  Every 2-3 weeks we change our display.  We sometimes use current events (the recent LA fires, the renaming of certain geographic features) and build a display around that, or I am allowed to pick a country, state, city, region, etc., of interest  to me.  We try to feature a few different types of maps - topo, street map, our plastic raised relief maps, or others.  We also usually put a book or

Hi,

At the Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information, Penn State University Libraries, we often include displays that we have created in our Maps and Geospatial blog. Displays are often a combination of materials designed for print display on the wall, and items for the map case. As new blog posts are created, they are the front page of the blog. Many of the student part-time Maps and Geospatial Assistants create blogs related to relevant items to the collection, and resources. We recently have included a video portion to accompany the display.

Dear all,

I’m reaching out again for advice.

We originally planned to purchase the Gaylord oversized map case with
drawers (XLFF595 - 24 1/4"H x 95"W x 62"D). However, after consulting with
a library colleague responsible for ordering and moving large items, we
learned that these map drawers cannot be turned sideways and must remain
level during transport. Unfortunately, no entryways into our Map Room can
accommodate their dimensions. Even the loading dock and freight elevator
won’t work, as the door leading from the freight elevator room into the
rest of the library is only 40" wide.

I don’t know how practical or even possible that would be for your situation.

Many (not all, but most) of the 100k maps are in the topo viewer:

I don't know of a website, but if you want a file that lists of them all,
the USGS provides CSVs / spreadsheets that you can download (there are

Recently I noticed that a lot of map records use the Prime characters Miagkii znak (ʹ) [U+02B9) and Tverdyi znak (ʺ) [U+02BA] to represent (arc)minutes and (arc)seconds for coordinates. I understand that LRCI 1.0e (2006) indicates to use the Miagkii/ Tverdyi znak symbology. (Arc)minutes (′) [U+2032] and (arc)seconds (″) [U+2033] have been available for around 30 years in Unicode. Within Unicode, the LCRI prescribed characters seem to presently be more representative of transliterations of Cyrilic hard sign and soft sign characters.

Hi Lee,

Following up to what Paige said, bibliographic records need to be able to
be distributed in both Unicode and MARC-8. But if a Unicode character is
not represented in the MARC-8 character set, there is not a way to do the
conversion from Unicode to MARC-8. This is probably a key reason the change
hasn't been made.

One of the faculty members and I are doing a project on Cuba. He recently visited Cuba and found historical aerial photos of Cuba taken in the 1950s. He was told that the aerial photos were taken by the United States. I searched NARA's website that allows you to look for the foreign aerial photos taken by the Defense Intelligence Agency. I found many, but almost all seem to be related to mission specific aerial photos and are not very useful for creating an orthomosaic image of the study area. I am guessing that historical aerial photos of Cuba might
