Dear Map Community,

I am sad to announce that we recently we discovered that the Online Guide to Map Collections has been taken down and the data cannot be fully recovered. We are doing our best to get as much of the data back as possible, but this will certainly be a setback. We are using this time to reenvision the project and to see if we can create a sustainable organizational structure that can support future development of the Online Guide.

Nautical Chart of the Mediterranean

Hello Maps-L!

I have a patron request for a map of the western Mediterranean. I've found several maps (numbers 52000, 52010, 53000, etc) that show this area, but I've had no luck finding a single map of the entire Mediterranean.

Our nautical chart collection is largely unused, so when it's requested, I feel like I'm taking a lot of time to sort through international charts. Here is my ask:

Hi Lisa,

Our nautical chart collection is largely unused and finding maps can be challenging. Though we do have a chart on display showing a body of water that has undergone a name change recently.

I use this site to find sheet number and, in this case, it gives the map numbers with a way to purchase as they can't viewed per NGA rules. This commercial site might be easier to use than the book you have been using.

Hello Laura,

Our institute will just be starting a weeding and de-duping project, so unfortunately, we don't yet have any ideas yet
However, are there any GPO experts here?
We have a lot of duplicate copies of USGS maps, but these were NOT given to us via USGPO, but rather through faculty clean out of offices or random donations, or as people left the institute. We were just accumulating and taking them and adding them to our collection.

Hello,

If there is a paper copy remaining in the Libraries, you do not need to offer the topo maps. Also, the topo maps supersede, so you don't need to offer older additions if there is a more recent print edition in the Libraries. I don't have any good advice for how to dispose of them. (I get offers from other libraries or private individuals several times a year and always turn them away.) Most libraries are downsizing and the best I can do is suggest they make great wrapping paper. More on disposal below.

Hello Laura,

We also receive many duplicate maps from other departments when they are cleaning out their spaces. Once we have verified that they are indeed duplicates, we stamp them as "Withdrawn" and put them in a clearly marked giveaway pile. It is very popular with students, staff, and faculty, and the maps get a second life when they are used for art projects, wrapping paper, or wall decorations. A much better option than having them sit in a landfill. When patrons come to peruse the giveaway maps, we simply check for the withdrawn stamp before they take the maps

Hi Laura,

I've seen a mix of 'free material' tables inside or outside the library front doors; student/volunteer-run discarded item shops (UCLA had a great one I used to haunt, as did the WA state library in Perth); and (per Kathy's comments) staff secretly binning items into locked bins to avoid public scrutiny/scandal... although the latter tends to make reputational issues even worse if/once it comes to light. Honest, open accountability is always preferable IMO, especially for any state-funded institution.

In 2019, we had pretty good results using Backstage Library Works to catalog hundreds of maps. Our in-house catalogers didn't agree with how Backstage cataloged a small percentage of the maps, but overall Backstage was good to work with.

Besides Susan's excellent response (and the first resource I also though of) in I believe Appendix B of Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 is a table with some uncommon scale types that might prove useful in some instances. But Jan's resource was by far the most comprehensive covering early/unusual scale types from around the world, including the many versions of "mile".

I'm puzzled today over not being able to download/export GeoTIFF files from the ProQuest Sanborn product. Their GeoTIFF availability was their main selling point. It has been awhile since I've wanted that functionality so I don't know how long it has been missing from the interface. Searching back through old emails, I'm only finding an exchange with ProQuest Tech Support circa November 2013 because the GeoTIFF export wasn't functioning. I assume we got it back up and running. My understanding is that Proquest shut down their Geoedition Sanborn Maps in 2019 or 2020.

Proquest discontinued the GeoTIFF service at the end of June, 2020. The
primary reason given, IIRC, was that the site didn't meet accessibility
standards and it wasn't worth their investment to revamp it. At the time,
I was interested in discussing an alternative arrangement for access to the
GeoTIFFs, but that never really got any traction with the Proquest people
unfortunately. I have no idea whether they still have them archived.

Good afternoon,
I'm hoping someone here knows the term for the marks in this image.

It's an index for a series of Otto Roach Photography oblique aerial images
of Denver, with the vertical tag indicating the direction of the photo (#31
is a photo taken toward the SW), and the number indicating the photo
number. The location of the marker seems to indicate the location of the

It's a good idea to retain charts for your area.

If NOAA is no longer sending print charts, then it's important to print out
the charts for your area.

Patrons using printed maps will be able to see the map all at once...

As for promoting use through the news, we have a nautical chart of the Gulf of Mexico (as printed on the map.)

We get less than one question per year about nautical charts, which is higher than the print superseded topographic maps of states other than Pennsylvania in print. I normally use TopoView for patron questions for topographic maps. I do get patrons wanting the printed topos of PA even if they are superseded.

Hello Katie.

UC Santa Barbara has a large collection of Fairchild aerial photography. Fairchild used a numerical code for each flight they did which got progressively higher over time. Assuming that the flight code of 1560 is part of the same numbering system, that flight should have been taken circa 1931. In the UCSB collection, Fairchild flights 1540 through 1600 were all flown in May of 1931.

Hi Katie,

My educatated guess is that this is the 95th frame of Flight #3550. If you have other images you would notice a pattern. For example, if 3550 is on all photos or there is a 96, 97 and so on.

Also, your surname caught me off guard at first because “fiducial marks” are a set of marks located in the corners, edge-centers, or both of an aerial photographic image. These marks are exposed within the camera onto the original film and are used to define the frame of reference for spatial measurements on aerial photographs. Perhaps useful for

What's throwing me on this photo is that most of our Fairchild imagery is
vertical, and not oblique like this one, and the flight numbers begin with
either C or NY to indicate the California or New York office. So I'm not

Hi folks:

Now through Monday, May 19 at 5pm ET, the Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library welcomes applications to our Small Grants Fund for Early Career Digital Publications for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The grant consists of a stipend of $1,200 to support research and development time, together with institutional research and technical support from LMEC staff through the stages of the digital publication process. Projects may be conducted by scholars working both inside and outside of the academy on all topics related to geography, maps, history, and the humanistic spatial social sciences, either individually or in a group (though the stipend amount is fixed regardless of the number of scholars involved in the project). The primary author of the publication should be an early career scholar. Read more about eligibility and how to apply on our website: https://www.leventhalmap.org/research/digital-publication-small-grants/

For examples of previous publications, see below:

  • John Winthrop’s “City on a Hill,” Mapped, by Nathan Braccio—an annotated tour through a single map, produced using the LMEC-created Panel Truck interface
  • Mapping Renewal, Engaging Residents, by Claire Dunning—a textual essay containing numerous images and zoom-in embeds from Digital Commonwealth and LMEC collections
  • The Brownies' Book in Boston, by Tieanna Graphenreed—a short essay and accompanying web map

making orthophoto mosaic layers in ArcPRO with historic air photos

All,

I have 168,000+ air photos of Colorado dating from the 1930s to early 2000s. I would love to scan various sets of these photos & mash them into 1 orthophoto layer per set (so a single layer containing the 1938 set of photos of my area).

I work in ArcPRO for desktop. I have found a few tutorials but they don't seem to fit my situation. Most tutorials deal with more modern data taken by satellites or by airplanes and have a large amount of associated metadata.

Hello,

I am working with a couple of other map catalogers to bring a proposal to
the MARC Advisory Committee to add a code for remote sensing images to
field 008/25 and field 006/08 Type of cartographic material. Right now, our
options are: single map, map series, map serial, globe, atlas, separate
supplement to another work, bound as a part of another work, unknown,
other, and no attempt to code. We have examples of aerial photography but
we need to include examples of satellite imagery as well. If people could
point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Hi all,

I'm currently going through our atlas collection, as many of them are in
bad shape or simply very out of date.

However, trying to find appropriate replacements is proving difficult,
especially from international publishing houses that no longer exist (I'm
based in the US). Do y'all have suggestions for where to look for atlases?
I've searched for the publishers and been going into WorldCat to see what's
out there with similar subject tags, but finding things published
relatively recently has proven challenging.

Many years ago I used to frame up a map every Monday in the library
elevator foyer with "Maps in the News"--I'd scour the news for something a
map/location could be worked in, find a physical map (this was at
TTU--there was a large collection from which to draw from) and write up
something from the story. This was a physical thing, predating what social
media has morphed into. You might be able to do this for Cleveland
locations from the maps you have?

Hi Lisa,

While I have never had the pleasure of visiting Cleveland and therefore
can't give you any super specific ideas, I always like leaning into local
history along with that which makes your city/library/collection unique. I
find that the city (Los Angeles in my case) provides most of the stories,
and the maps just help illustrate them. Sanborns are a goldmine of
interesting stories about places and neighborhoods that have changed over
time, as well as famous locations, and places where notable folks may have
lived or worked. Railroad maps, shipping routes, old transportation
systems, and early road maps

Lisa,
Sorry for the late reply.  At the Univ. of Maryland library, we  were given four display cabinets in the 4th floor hallway to use for map displays.  Every 2-3 weeks we change our display.  We sometimes use current events (the recent LA fires, the renaming of certain geographic features) and build a display around that, or I am allowed to pick a country, state, city, region, etc., of interest  to me.  We try to feature a few different types of maps - topo, street map, our plastic raised relief maps, or others.  We also usually put a book or

Hi,

At the Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information, Penn State University Libraries, we often include displays that we have created in our Maps and Geospatial blog. Displays are often a combination of materials designed for print display on the wall, and items for the map case. As new blog posts are created, they are the front page of the blog. Many of the student part-time Maps and Geospatial Assistants create blogs related to relevant items to the collection, and resources. We recently have included a video portion to accompany the display.

Dear all,

I’m reaching out again for advice.

We originally planned to purchase the Gaylord oversized map case with
drawers (XLFF595 - 24 1/4"H x 95"W x 62"D). However, after consulting with
a library colleague responsible for ordering and moving large items, we
learned that these map drawers cannot be turned sideways and must remain
level during transport. Unfortunately, no entryways into our Map Room can
accommodate their dimensions. Even the loading dock and freight elevator
won’t work, as the door leading from the freight elevator room into the
rest of the library is only 40" wide.

I was told that when University of Oregon Libraries needed to bring a lot of map cases into Knight Library, they ended up taking the glass out of a section of large ceiling to floor windows so they could move the cases into the current map library. I don’t know how practical or even possible that would be for your situation.

Hello Tony,

Many (not all, but most) of the 100k maps are in the topo viewer:

I don't know of a website, but if you want a file that lists of them all,
the USGS provides CSVs / spreadsheets that you can download (there are
several different lists, you'd have to download and open a few of them to
see what's what). These are available here:

Greetings all,

Map cataloging is not my forte, so I come seeking the collective wisdom of the Listserv.

Recently I noticed that a lot of map records use the Prime characters Miagkii znak (ʹ) [U+02B9) and Tverdyi znak (ʺ) [U+02BA] to represent (arc)minutes and (arc)seconds for coordinates. I understand that LRCI 1.0e (2006) indicates to use the Miagkii/ Tverdyi znak symbology. (Arc)minutes (′) [U+2032] and (arc)seconds (″) [U+2033] have been available for around 30 years in Unicode. Within Unicode, the LCRI prescribed characters seem to presently be more representative of transliterations of Cyrilic hard sign and soft sign characters.

Hello Lee,

Seeing that none of my map cataloging colleagues have jumped in with suggestions or answers I'll go ahead and give this a shot. If especially someone at LC G&M Division can either verify or clarify what I am about to share please do so!

For many years we catalogers were only able to use symbols available on a typewriter or computer keyboard for the degrees, minutes, and seconds symbols. Those would be a superscript zero, single apostrophe, and double apostrophe. This was also what the MARC format could accommodate in our bib. records and what you will still

Hi Lee,

Following up to what Paige said, bibliographic records need to be able to
be distributed in both Unicode and MARC-8. But if a Unicode character is
not represented in the MARC-8 character set, there is not a way to do the
conversion from Unicode to MARC-8. This is probably a key reason the change
hasn't been made.

He was told that the aerial photos were taken by the United States. I searched NARA's website that allows you to look for the foreign aerial photos taken by the Defense Intelligence Agency. I found many, but almost all seem to be related to mission specific aerial photos and are not very useful for creating an orthomosaic image of the study area. From the checking I have done there might be a flight of Cuba at NARA done in 1956-57 (~64,000 scale) and possibly 1949-51 (~40,000 scale). It would take a bit of research to know if either covers the entire country. HIG could certainly assist you with that research and any film scanning that you would want done.

Maybe this is because it's hosted on Esri's hub.arcgis.com, not a .gov site, but I guess it's still tenuous if the source agency wants to pull it down. I hope it stays this way, although downloading as much as possible might be smart.

USGS 1:48,000 topo quads?

Hello colleagues,

How do you all treat the various 1:48,000-scale 15' USGS quadrangle sheets of the US?
We have two versions of "Bright Angel" in Arizona, and one version of "Three Lakes" in Wisconsin.
Are these part of the same 'series'?
Is the Wisconsin one a sheet from a Wisconsin series?
Or are both individual one-off sheets?
Are they simply enlargements of previously-published 1:62,500 sheets, or resurveys?

Hello,

You may remember that in my earlier email about the discussion papers and
proposals for the MARC Advisory Committee, I mentioned that Discussion
Paper 2025-DP02 suggests adding a code for remote sensing images to Type of
cartographic material (008/25 and 006/08). Right now, the options are a for
single map, b for map series, c for map serial, d for glove, e for atlas, f
for separate supplement to another work, g for bound as part of another
work, u for unknown, and z for other. The discussion will be on the idea of

Hi Susan,

For those institutions that catalog aerial photos by project using a set record approach, having a code for the plural ‘aerial photos’ (or ‘remote sensing images’?) makes sense. For example, here’s our Primo record for the set of photos for project NW95<https://orbiscascade-washington.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01ALLIANCE_UW/1juclfo/alma99122273810001452>. (the 008 field for this record reads as: 008 080529s1995 wau b s 1 eng )

Aerial photos ARE remote-sensing images, therefore it does not make sense to me to add a specific code for that type. On the other hand, those map collections that have very large aerial photo collections might benefit from delineating? Bottom line is that if it helps patrons find what they are looking for I can back it.

Hello,

The MARC Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet January 29th with a
meeting on the 30th if warranted. There's one discussion paper that is of
definite interest to some of us

Discussion Paper 2025-DP02 raises the potential of adding *code r for
"remote sensing image"* to fields 008/25 and 006/08 (Maps). If you have
thoughts on this please let me know by January 28th. This may be a
discussion paper that gets fast tracked instead of being brought back as a
proposal so this might be our only chance to weigh in on the idea.

The website of the California Dept of Conservation (who oversee the Geological Survey) is down.... fire related perhaps? so I have been unable to see what info they have.

I can find a series record similar to our on Worldcat, and individual sheet listings, but has anyone compiled a complete listing (ideally: sheet number, title, scale, date).

We have a copy of that atlas on a display shelf among the map collection file cabinets at the University of Maryland library.  I have seen numerous students stop and look at that atlas - sometimes just flipping through a few pages, sometimes spending several minutes perusing various maps and chapters.  With the 250th Anniversary of U.S. Independence coming up, wouldn't it be nice to have a brand new, updated edition of that atlas?  I wonder if we - as map lovers - reached out to the Interior Dept./U.S. Geological Survey (publishers of the original atlas) - and encouraged

Hello Map Libraries Collective!

I am in need of aid!
I have received a reference question for help locating a rather specific NTS map. It is the 1:25,000 Topographic map of Gaspe, Quebec (022A06D). Requester has stated an interest in the map being published before 1970.

I was only able to locate up to 022D06F on Canada's ftp website<https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/raster/topographic/25k_pdf/>.

Good morning,

Thanks for posting Sam. I don’t have the answer, but this researcher also contacted me, and I was about to post this to the list. Thank you for doing this!

I provided the following response:
“The sheet you’re looking for is part of the 1:25,000 series. I looked at our holdings at Queen’s, and we don’t have the sheet either. I think an easier way to find it would be using order 22 D6 A (this order may help).

Hello,

So, from what's available from the Government of Canada Digital topographic indexes<https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/d248b5be-5887-4cfb-942f-d425d82e6ea9>, it doesn't look like that 1:25 000 map of that area is around anywhere – similarly, I didn't find anything in the BANQ<https://numerique.banq.qc.ca/>.

The only one I've found for that particular area pre-1970, is a 1:50 000 sheet from 1955, which is available on Borealis: https://borealisdata.ca/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.5683/SP3/5TGN9L

Hello all

It is with sadness that I write to inform the map library community of
the passing of Alice Hudson, former Chief of the Map Division of The New
York Public Library. Alice passed away on November 6th, and a lovely
obituary was published in the New York Times on Friday:

Alice joined the Map Division in 1970, was promoted to Assistant Chief,

Good morning,
I'm working with a grad student in geography who is researching the
physical coast of West Africa where the slave ports were. They are looking
for detailed charts of the West African coast down to about the mouth of
the Congo, particularly ones that show dangers in the water. The larger
scale the better! Modern charting is fine. We've looked at the NGA nautical
charts and I'm wondering if anyone has other sources to look into.

These have detailed descriptions of harbors along the West Coast of Africa. Due to a weeding project of very old gov docs, I learned that the United States Navy Hydrographic Office published detailed descriptions of ports in a series of sailing and pilot directions books covering non-US waters.

Hi all,

We had a class looking at maps of Asia for a final portfolio project. One student was looking at a JOG from Vietnam and saw the word "abandoned" a lot (see below). Does this mean abandoned air fields/runaways? Abandoned trails? Something else? According to the legend, a purple circle (near several of the "abandoned" labels) is a runway with the pattern known (is that the slash in the circle?). So, our guess was an abandoned runway, but can anyone confirm?

The Library of Congress cutter for Custer National Forest in Montana is C8,
so the 052 field would be 4252 C8.
But, Custer National Forest merged with Gallatin National Forest to form

Hi Marilyn,

In my opinion since the first word in the name did not change then there is no need to change the Geographic Area Code that goes in the 052 field. What needs to be changed is the label for the National Forest in LC's list so that it matches the current situation. But, that is just my opinion (and in my opinion I would include an 052 because if your local system uses that data for retrieval it would provide another matching point) and it would be best to ask this question of the folks at LC Geography

Now we have a large amount of aerial photographs in our catalog. But - they are defined as maps. The only way to separate them from maps is with the genre (field 655). I don't know if
