USGS Maps Scaling & Printing

Hello Maps-L!

We just had a patron ask about the correctness of the scale/grading if items from USGS TopoView are printed on a large format printer. My instinct is that, no matter the size of the print, the scale would still relate to the contours/accuracy of the map as a whole. Please confirm my assumptions, or let me know if you have other information!

Hi Lisa,

If there is a graphic scale on the map, it will still be accurate as it resizes with the map print (but may not be in convenient units anymore). If there is an RF scale (e.g. 1:40,000) it will not be accurate if the map is resized form original, it only relates to the original map dimensions.

Hi, Lisa--

Basically, as long as he pays attention to the graphical scale bars (or the "contour interval 10 feet"-type notices), he should be fine no matter how large or small he prints the map. Those scale bars will shrink down or expand in the same proportion as the rest of the map if he prints it smaller or larger than the original. So if the graphical scale bar shows "1 mile," it will always be "1 mile" in proportion to the whole map.

I will be retiring as Map and Geography Librarian at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign effective May 31, 2026.

It has been a wild and joyful ride filled with amazing people, beautiful objects, and interesting problems.

I am looking forward to spending more, and higher quality, time with my cello and other instruments as well as the inevitable post-retirement house projects, continuing my deep affiliation with NACIS, and moving forward postponed writing projects.

There are 2 sheets of which I was unaware, and the four I had previously questioned were indeed never issued.
A jpg of the best index he sent me is attached, and the full series sheet listing is now:

Hi all,

I've been unable to find a published AMS index for series E761 Panama 1:50,000 (our AMS catalogues are all WW2, and the series began in 1950)

But we have enough sheets that I have been able to reconstruct one from the 'index to adjoining sheets', and it might be useful to some of you.
Of the 37 sheets I have indexed, we do not hold Montijo (in the SW), San Miguel (in the NW), or Mandinga and Samgandi (in the NE), so I can't tell if the series extends west or east (respectively) of those sheets or not.

Fascinating that 3 sheets in the series are still shown, and not as then replaced by E762.

I am hoping someone has an earlier DMA/AMS catalog that might show the full E761 before E762 began?

You're welcome :)

Unfortunately, we only have this particular edition of the catalog, and
as far as I know, this was actually the last printed catalog, each
subsequent edition was digital only, and now it's a daily updated
database.

And as far as the actual sheets, we only have the following two:

E761XPALENQUE 1954

not included on the list, but I'm passing along a picture in case the
absence is helpful! If the researcher would like to request a full scan

I dug up a 1962 map of Monterrey that shows the southern outskirts of town. Hotels are not marked but at least you can see the road network. I see two roads leading south out of town – Carretera a Chipinque leading to the southwest and Carretera a Mexico leading to the southeast. Carretera a Mexico is also labeled with a highway “85” symbol.

Hi Larry,

ASU Library can offer another imperfect specimen for your researcher. It falls outside the requested date range and does not identify a “Siesta Hotel” or “Sierra Motel” (despite explicitly labeling some hotels). It does, however, show the southern approach into Monterrey and the primary highway corridors, which may help clarify the area in question.

Hi All,

I'm cataloging a map "A new commuter's guide to South Minneapolis" and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest or comment on subject headings for such a map.

On the verso is a map "ICE abductors in South Minneapolis Jan. 26th-Feb. 2nd, 2026." There are phone numbers and websites for MONARCA Rapid Response Line, Copal, and National Lawyers Guild but no clear creator. It's an anti-ICE map with suggestions for safely protesting and safely not getting arrested.

Angie, and all others,
Since we, as catalogers, are required NOT to put any political bias in our subject headings, we can only put two of those in, in my opinion

61020U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ǂv Maps.
650 0Immigration renforcement ǂz Minnesota ǂz Minneapolis ǂv Maps.

Nobody will stop you to put additional 500 fields in and include information such as: designed as an Anti-ICE map, or: includes phone numbers to ….
My two cents.

First, I agree with Laura McElfresh's comment about the number of subject headings to provide, sometimes too many can be misleading or at minimum can guide someone down the wrong path. Of course any and all of the things you do or do not include falls under "cataloger's judgement" as well.

Hello collective wisdom,

I have never before cataloged a map that includes an attached paper ruler (see images in the link below).
It has also been a very looooooong time since I last encountered something like this.

My question is: what is the proper name for this type of ruler?
We have been calling it a pointer, since it points to exact places on the map, but I am not sure whether that is the correct term.

Describe it based on its purpose. We've had some of these attached with a brad and others attached with a grommet. So if it's an index guide or a mileage guide, include a note using those words and giving dimensions. I suppose you could a subfield $$e in your 300, but not necessary.

experience you all have in this area...

We’ve emptied the flat files they were originally in and moved those to our

experience with this and had any recommendations. Reading online, I’ve

Ryan,

You are correct to be worried about overspray.

I caution you not to use graphite powder. Even when applied sparingly, it tends to get everywhere. (Static electricity.) However, you can buy it in small squeeze tubes for lubricating locks. It is sold for lubricating locks because it doesn't trap dirt and become abrasive like greases can. I have seen applications of powdered graphite to door hinges that, after a few months, have migrated to the woodwork and leave a black smear near the hinges. And, once applied, it is too late to have second thoughts. I doubt it can

I second the bearings. I found greatly improved drawer movement because it was that the bearings in the wheels had seized up.

For sure the rails were bent, but all the lubrication in the world wouldn’t help that.

I think we used bicycle grease and toothpicks. A proper grease syringe would have been faster.

Hi, all,

Although I have not been actively engaged in the maps community for a number of years due to being "kicked upstairs," I know many of you old-timers on the list.

After 26 years at Stanford, I am retiring at the end of June. I started out as a map intern in 1998 at Branner Earth Sciences Library at Stanford. I was hired full time as the map librarian in 2000 and rode the geospatial wave that lifted so many of us up for 20 years. It was really an exciting time with the release of Keyhole, which became

I'm also not too active anymore--more "kicked to the map library curb" than
"kicked upstairs" 😄--but one thing I'll always remember and appreciate was
how welcome I felt at WAML meetings; Julie was a big part of that. I'm
grateful to you for that, Julie. It was tough to get out to WAML from DC

Hi Chris,

First...breathe. I think it's going to be ok.

Our layers and webmaps work just fine, but we had to create new applications. To start we tried using the Instant app, which is IMO probably good enough for simple webmaps like I remember of yours. We however, used Experience Builder to customize our pages<https://libraries.psu.edu/about/collections/sanborn-fire-insurance-maps/state-college> as we needed some additional functionality.

Hi Chris,

This must be an aftershock of the ArcGIS Desktop being deprecated/retired
on March 1, 2026. Perhaps something that was not factored in? ESRI should
have some migration steps set up? Or perhaps, akin to when an early version
of Story Maps "retired" there was no plan beyond printing your map story
out as a pdf. Ideally the Basic (Media) Instant app can provide some help.

Any copyright experts here? (question about French maps)

Hello all,

We have a collection of these maps from France from 1954:

Atlas des anciens diocèses de France

OCLC 44821952

We received a request from another university (via ILL) to see if we would be willing to digitize these and send them pdf’s of the entire collection.

We are not certain about copyright as it applies to these French maps.

Hi Tony,

In Australia, all the maps would be out of copyright, because CNRS is a government body and government copyright is 50 years; but even if is argued that CNRS doesn’t count as ‘government’, the maps published in 1954 and 1955 would be public domain (70 years for non-government copyright).
In the US, I would tend to class a university library request as fair use, especially if the item is not available commercially “at a reasonable cost in a reasonable time”, and I see there are no copies for sale at AbeBooks.

France is life of the author + 70 years for authored works, 70 years
from publication for collective works, which this seems to be. So you
should be safe, as of last year.

Hi Tony,

We fill all our ILL requests by scanning and creating pdf files. Seems like fair use to me, but I am no expert. I do admit the "whole set" part is the only thing that would possibly be an issue. To get around that, the requesting library could break up their request into chunks.

Hi Tony,

Are you able to consult with someone from your university's legal team?
I've found these colleagues to be quite helpful in the past with getting
access to updated information with respect to questions of relevance to
fair use and copyright. If that's not an option (or if this is outside of
their scope), a few possible resources suggest that a consultation or email
with the Reproduction team at the Bibliotheque nationale de France
<https://www.bnf.fr/en/order-reproduction-non-commercial-use> may be
helpful, especially given that you all are looking to digitize and
circulate over an entire collection. Recent guidance from Harvard

Hi Holly,
Geographers still use topographic maps (which appears to be an example of
the map you've shown in the attached image). These kinds of maps can be
especially valuable in teaching introductory classes especially with
learners who are not familiar with reading maps, using compasses, or
working with map collections, etc. For research purposes, though, most
researchers would prefer paper maps that are already available for use in a
digital format suitable for mapping and geospatial technologies and
relevant software.

My take from being in map ecommerce/SEO space for 25+ years:

It looks like perhaps entirely ai generated site with images of maps, very thin content and not really anything referencing a company. It doesn’t appear that the site is monetized in any way at this time. I’d speculate plan is to get lots of sites (yes, ideally .edu sites) linking to it as a free resource then turn on ad sense once it’s reached a mature state with robust backlinks. For now it seems like a pretty good resource for free map images but my guess it won’t be

Hi Merch,
That sounds like a very interesting project and potentially a notable gap
in our digital mapping resources that could be useful for sharing and
preservation purposes. I'm seeing a few of the boundaries digitized as
polygon boundaries from this University of Arkansas resource
<https://risingabove.cast.uark.edu/maps> and potentially in this Omeka

from the California Secretary of State. You may want to reach out to the
creators of that tool at UA Little Rock to see if they have digitized those
smaller areas in California and haven't yet gotten them into their online

Morning all!

I don’t have an answer—only a question: Has anyone considered the impact of
AI-generated digital map collections? How can we effectively discern
authenticity?
In the digital age, maps created or altered using AI present a unique
challenge. Unlike text, where changes to letters or numbers may be easier
to detect, maps contain a vast amount of detailed information—such as
boundaries, place names, and geographic features—making subtle
modifications difficult to identify.
This raises important questions about the reliability and integrity of
digital map data moving forward.

Hi Anna,
Thanks for the resources and links. These are certainly very real concerns,
especially as we've all seen an explosion in the development and widespread
uses of AI tools for all kinds of digital work. I would hope that
colleagues are engaging geoAI tools, critically (especially as we are
continuing to do some training of at least some of these new tools at this
point). The AI resources that I've found to be most helpful would be closer
to AI-assist, which gives researchers a lot of leeway for interpretation
and revisions. I'd think our critical engagement of these tools

Ooh, this is a fun one. Agreed, I think they are showing zigzag fencing (like split-rail) around margin of a cultivated field which is what they are trying to show with those lines.

Have you looked through the field notes for details about the symbology? I didn’t dive in but the overview in the subdivision survey says, “Settlements can be found in several different portions of the Tp [township]” and there may be other notes about the fences, fields, etc.

hand-drawn, artistic hosted basemap

Hello,
A researcher here wants to build a web interface to highlight three cities on a basemap- Hong Kong, Singapore, Vancouver- with clickable video footages below the map. They want the base map to have an artistic and hand-drawn feeling. I'm looking at the Stamen basemap<https://maps.stamen.com/watercolor/#4/43.00/-187.47> and Esri's Watercolour Map - Overview<https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=21812b28afea4091bc57472297aa73d4>. But the problem is that the basemap's opacity will block the videos. Are there any hosted basemaps that have a hand-drawn look but without the watercolor texture, or that use more line-based transparency?

Assuming there is enough time and the researchers re so inclined, they may want to make their own basemaps with a hand drawn style and possibly the right layout or transparencies for their video elements. Below are some resources.

Project Linework is a database of global and regional vector layers, many of them with a "hand crafted" look: https://www.projectlinework.org/

Thank you so much, David! These resources will be very helpful if we decide that the route of creating a basemap is viable.

I think the idea of placing videos below a basemap is to match the aesthetic/thematic goal of the project content. But you are right- a basemap is intended to be at the bottom, so this vision is indeed quite unusual. I'll let you know what we end up coming up with.

Hi Sarah,
I hope this email finds you well. Does it need to already be hosted? Or is
it possible that this researcher can get space on a local server or
university cloud? Have you looked to alternate possible vendors--like
Mapbox; they have a Mapbox Studio <https://www.mapbox.com/mapbox-studio>
product that appears to enable users to create custom maps. If server/cloud
space is a possibility, you may also look into something with QGIS
<https://andywoodruff.com/posts/2024/qgis-hand-drawn-maps/>. Have you all
checked with the vendors of those two links to see if they have a quick fix
solution, like a different file they could circulate onto

Hi Ann,

Thanks very much! Getting a local server's space is possible, but I think creating our own basemap and tiling it and hosting it might be a little too much. The Mapbox Studio option looks promising! I'll explore. Thanks for the link to the Esri function as well.

I really appreciate all the insights folks generously shared.

Use of square brackets

Hello all!

We're setting up a copy catalog training for maps here at OSU and I have a quick question about the use of square brackets in a record.

From all of Paiges books and presentations I've found it looks like the use of square brackets in map records is done when the information comes from a resource outside of the item itself, as well as when the cataloger themselves provides the information. (Along with a 500 note explaining where it came from.)

Hi Shoshana!

Please remember that when my book was written THE cataloging rules of the time were AACR2 and thus statements about the use of square brackets in describing maps reflect those rules. With the advent of RDA some of this was changed, notably in 255$a where we used to use "ca." and square brackets in specific instances. Of course, in RDA almost all abbreviating was abolished and so "ca." now should always be written as "approximately" and square brackets are not used for supplied scale information (IF, of course, your local department is using RDA).

Hi Shoshana-

Under RDA 2.2.4, it looks like you'd be on solid ground in accepting copy that includes one or the other (square brackets or a note) for supplied info in the categories specified. But I suspect you won't encounter very much usable copy where that supplied info is supported by notes alone, in part because of an LC-PCC Policy Statement for 2.2.4, which specifies to use brackets.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your inquiry. It appears that you should be able to create a
custom US topo map with the USGS's OnDemand Topo mapping tool (for
contemporary maps). They do have a separate tool for historic maps dating
to 1886 though you'd need to check to see if those also include custom
areas of interest. Link to the page with OnDemand tool and additional
resources is here

you're looking to piece together this area using sheet maps (for say an art
project), you may check with colleagues at the Library of Congress

Tony,

In such cases we always used the Library of Congress' Cyrillic translation tables to transliterate and then search for copy in WorldCat. If that failed I could always go to one of two colleagues in our cataloging department who knew Russian to assist, especially when the text on the map was italicized, making it more difficult to determine specific letters.

Thanks Michal for assisting with a translation, in the few times that I used Google Translate for Cyrillic or other languages it was often only partially accurate.

So Tony, this is a topographic map and your subject headings should reflect that, or maybe I should say that if you find OCLC copy there should be subject headings speaking to that issue plus it should be classified as such in the call number too.

I am hoping someone has a paper copy of the AMS catalog page with this index. I have M841/GSGS 4414 for Germany,

but seek M851/GSGS4414 for Poland

Hi Brendan,

We've got a scan of the GSGS version of the index (GSGS 4414 plus GSGS

A low resolution photo is attached. If you need a better scan, please
let me know (it's a large file)

value in retaining Landsat 1 imagery?

Good morning,
I'm working through a retired professor's old filing cabinets of aerial
imagery to determine what to take into the library's collections. There are
several drawers of transparencies of Landsat 1 imagery (N31 - N45) from
1973-1975.

What do folks think? Are these worth retaining within our library's
collection?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Should you decide not to keep them all, I would certainly recommend retaining half a dozen as representative examples of the state of the art of the time. Students are often fascinated by obsolete technologies.

Atlases versus Books with Maps

Good afternoon, everyone,

I'm re-cataloging several 16th century editions of Ptolemy's Geography, and our existing records are split between describing it as a book versus an atlas. This led to a discussion between me and my supervisor about how we decide whether something is an atlas or a book that has maps in it. We were curious what other folks think, so I bring the question to all of you: how do you decide when to treat a book as an atlas? I'm curious to hear any and all thoughts and rationale!

My practice is that if a record exists out there in the world and it matches, do copy cataloging whether it's book or atlas. If you're cataloging originally here is a guide from Columbia University:

Cataloging Atlases
Prior to the late 1990s the prevailing thought was that atlases were just like books and so the "books" format was used for the bibliographic record. Format integration in 1996 allowed the use of coding for content beyond the carrier. From the late 1990s on atlases have been considered to be cartographic materials and current rules and practices require atlases to be cataloged

Hi Brenna,

All of our Atlases are unfortunately described as books (in the item type).
As a result we lose the ability to filter by type, and then search within
an item type like Atlas. Though we can get a collection together searching
Atlas in the title.
It also limits us in pulling together a shelf/location list to see what
Altases we have throughout the entire system.

Ah, the age-old question, "when is an atlas a book versus a map?"

Brendan's reply is the best starting point anyone can give you, essentially it is the same advice I was given by map catalogers at the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division back in the late 1980s when I was starting out. But I stress that determining if the resource has more or less than 50% of maps in it is JUST a starting point. And thank Angie for sharing Columbia University's information on this topic as it has much more detail about what you'll find in

Aside from the few which were only text, we catalogued them as atlases.

Are there any other vendors?

Is it possible to get them with one of the long sides open, rather than a short side?

I've been investigating some encapsulation products myself. I can only order through limited vendors, so I've looked at University Products<https://www.universityproducts.com/collectors-storage/movie-posters-lobby-cards> as the most viable option (although the largest size wouldn't comfortably fit a roughly 32x44 in. map).

Gaylord doesn't seem to have anything map-sized, but I'll link them too in case you want to poke around: Gaylord<https://www.gaylord.com/> <https://www.gaylord.com/>
