Hi all,

Just a reminder to take the WAML 2024 Conference Survey for the upcoming conference in Albuquerque, NM (September 25-28th, 2024). We have a few quick questions and would love to have your input if you're planning on attending. Don't worry, this doesn't mean you will be committed to the responses, we just want a better idea of what the numbers might look like.

My father had a collection of 500+ USGS topo maps of the Western US. I am looking for a library that will accept this donation, rather than recycling these maps. These maps are not catalogued, so I cannot give specifics. UCLA suggested I post this here. I can be reached at [log in to unmask] Thank you.

Dear Map-L,

I'm writing to congratulate Meagan Snow on the publication of the 'Preserving Geospatial
Data' Watch Report by the Digital Preservation Coalition. Available here http://doi.org/10.7207/twr23-01

This was mentioned briefly on the list a couple of months back but I wanted to emphasise the importance of this report for our sector and beyond. Dr Snow has synthesised a broad range of material into an incredibly useful document and one that will no doubt be valuable for many years to come. The Legal Deposit Map Librarian's Group in the UK will certainly be consulting this regularly.

Hello,

A small group of us from the Map Curators' Group, British Cartographic Society, have been meeting to discuss topics around diversifying our map collections. Most recently we discussed collection content warnings or explanations. This is a topic under discussion across the GLAM sector.

Does anyone have examples of map collection or even map item specific content warnings they would be willing to share please?

Hi all,

As presaged in a message in December, I have finally completed indexing our holdings of USGS 24k (and 25k) topos/orthophotos.
Thank you to those who provided feedback at the time.

We have a very incomplete set of these sheets, as the exchange arrangement with USGS, under which this series was received, was cancelled circa 1990 when we began to fully realise how much storage the series would require and how little it actually got used. Our current US 24k holdings occupy about 170 drawers. They are arranged by state, in the same shelf order as the LC G-schedule

Hello All -

I have recently become the liaison for several departments and am taking care of our print map collection as part of my duties. I am a complete novice here. We are planning to move most of the collection to an off-campus site. This is an opportunity to weed, and I wondered if folks keep copies of photorevised maps. I was thinking to just keep the most recent. Is there a reason to keep the older ones?

Hello all,
I am starting to digitize large format materials. I have a camera set up with lights and a tether to the computer. The previous archivist also purchased Capture One software so I can control the camera from the computer.
I'm running into a few issues.

1. I have lots of maps on semi transparent paper. I think I've figured out that I need a white board behind them. Does anyone have any other suggestions for photographing maps on thin paper?
2. When I turn on the lights from the four side lights, the image looks very washed out.

Good morning all,
I am the archivist for a repository at ASU (not part of the library). I have lots of maps/drawings/sketches of archaeological sites. These are original, hand drawn materials. We are moving buildings and I've been asked to move the maps myself with my student workers. We have trucks so we're fine taking apart and moving the map cases. However, I'm trying to work out how to move the more delicate maps. We moved a stack of smaller cases where I kept the USGS topo maps in the drawers. We had to turn the drawers at a 45

The Library of Congress is pleased to announce the latest annual call for input from stakeholders involved in the lifecycle of creative works for the upcoming annual revision of the Recommended Formats Statement. The impactful changes made in recent years, including the expansion of content categories and improved tracking of changes, represent the Library's understanding of the growing importance of the Statement not merely in its own work, but to the broader community and its determination to ensure that it meet the needs of all its stakeholders. The RFS is a crucial tool in implementing the Library's Digital Collecting Strategy

Subject: Weeded maps for a service project
Dear Maps-L subscriber,

Would you have any weeded maps that you could donate for a service project? Any size, type or style would be fine. I would cut the maps into 9 ½ inch squares and create origami frames with messages. The frames would be included in care packages for U.S. service men and women sent by one of these organizations:
Operation: Care and Comfort [www.occ-usa.org<http://www.occ-usa.org/>]
Forgotten Soldiers Outreach [www.forgottensoldiers.org<http://www.forgottensoldiers.org/>]

We have a patron who would like to view three maps in one of our Open-file reports (OFR). Unfortunately, the maps have been kept folded and are in such bad condition that opening them might damage them further. We searched OCLC/WorldShare, but there aren't any copies listed. But whether I open it directly from the USGS store, https://store.usgs.gov/product/54160 or download the pdf and try opening it in Acrobat, Chrome or Edge, I always get a "corrupted file" message.
Is this just me, or is the file corrupted for all of you stateside as well?

Hi,
I'm looking for a sheet from the AMS Greenland 1:250k series (C501). The
sheet is NT 17, 18, 19, 20-10 (aka Hvalsund). I've seen evidence that this
sheet actually exists--it's even held by a few libraries (e.g., Harvard,
Penn St.)--but have not yet found it online.

No success at two of my usual sources for something like this:
* UMN's Polar Geospatial Center has the series but not the sheet
* UTexas--sorta inexplicably and against all odds--seems not to have the
series at all. (Am I blind?)

https://www.dpconline.org/news/twr-preserving-geospatial-data-gen-release

"This report is designed as a resource for use by librarians, archivists, and digital preservation specialists who may be new to the realm of geospatial data but want a practical understanding of the geospatial data files they encounter in their collections. It may also be useful to geographers, cartographers, academics, and researchers who are increasingly involved in the preservation decisions around their own research data or mapping products. The report focuses on describing challenges specific to the preservation and management of geospatial data."

Hi,

I have an instructor who envisions a map-grounded approach to storing reading materials for a field course. He hopes to link reading materials about communities to pins on a map. In a classroom setting, this is quite easy to do- you simply create a web map with some pins on it. However, in the field when internet connection is limited, what technologies/software can be used to achieve this?

As libraries continue to focus on new ways to facilitate the creation and sharing of knowledge, and as the volume and variety of information increases, metadata and metadata expertise is more important than ever. Evolving library data into linked data frees the knowledge in library collections and connects it to the knowledge streams that inform our everyday lives-on the web, through smart devices, and using technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).

Dear all

Historic England has been commissioned to provide a better understanding of the needs of the Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography (CUCAP)<https://www.geog.cam.ac.uk/facilities/cucap/> and to outline and appraise options for its future management.

CUCAP is the result of airborne survey campaigns which were started in 1943 by the pioneering JK St Joseph. Since then the collection has grown to almost 500,000 images of obliques and verticals in black and white, colour and infra-red. The collection is of international importance but has been closed since 2016; the last imagery was collected in 2010.

1. Does anyone have one they are willing to share with us?
2. At minimum I want to have adequate citation information. I have been running into some confusion/overlap of terms. It looks like people are using the following terms in this way
* Source - Archive/repository/owner of the original item scanned.
* Author - Company that flew

I have a friend who has about 500,000 parcel maps (of his city) for insurance purposes. Each of them also has some sort of database containing info on:
1. when the drawing was last updated
2. Whom it belongs to ,
3. Dimensions
4. What jurisdiction etc.

All the database is computerised excepting the drawing itself. Right now, the database, when queried, points to a physical location in his godown as to where the map is. Somebody has to physically go to the location and retrieve the maps. Any changes made there on are then stapled into the docket.

We invite you to participate in a survey about academic librarians’ support for disabled students. Even if you do not have extensive experience with disabled students, we would be very grateful for your input!

Does anyone know where I can find a decent resolution scan or other image of an index to the 1:100,000 (30'x60') topographic series?
I just need something showing sheetlines and names, that I can colour in to show our holdings.
Geokatalog2 (630, ed2, 1997 p.8) had a reasonable one, but their red overprint showing which sheets they sold makes it pretty much unreadable when scanned.
Something like that without the red overprint would be perfect, as it's still readable at A3 size.

The American Geographical Society Library Research Fellowship program is intended to help bring to the AGSL scholars who reside beyond commuting distance of UWM, and whose research would benefit from extensive use of the Library. Established by Helen and John S. Best, this fellowship opportunity now continues through the generous donations of members of the AGSL community who wish to continue the vision of the Bests. The Best family members are longtime supporters of UWM and the UWM Libraries and we are happy to continue to provide support for research in the AGSL collections.

We would use it for digitizing larger maps, archival documents and other items that are fragile and can't be fed through or bigger than a feeder options we already have.
