Susan,
I agree with Patrick, if you can, try and do a dual degree program.
With Madison (which is a really good school - ahem, I went there for
both Geog and Lib. Sci), you can do the both a degree in Geography and a
degree in Library Science. The library science program usually counts 9
credits from your MS geography degree. My recommendation would be,
given the way libraries are going to:
--get a GIS certificate OR an MS in Cartography/GIS and either
simultaneously or soon thereafter, get a MA in Library Information
Studies. UW-Madison offers all three; one can argue that you do the
Library Sc degree first; but if you have a specialization already, you
can sort of start specializing in courses, papers etc i.e., to
incorporate geology into your Lib. Sc curriculum.
--The Cartography/GIS specialization would really work for you as you
already have a geology background and perhaps don't really need a MS in
Geography; instead, you can learn more of the applied stuff which most
libraries really need.
Good luck, Salim
