Dear colleagues
At the FelixArchief (City Archives Antwerp, Belgium) we have recently
changed to a "scanning on demand service".
No original items can be checked out anymore. Colleagues from the city
administration needing anything from our archives can order it via
intranet. They get a digital copy delivered.
Some collections have been scanned entirely, such as the collection of
city maps of Antwerp. Jpeg consultation copies are freely available
online for our registered users. Anyone needing high res images can
order master tif files.
Best regards
Joost

Good Morning Mapsters,
I am seeking suggestions from other institutions on how they package and
protect maps that are checked out of the library. We allow our maps to
be briefly circulated to faculty and students to use for presentations
or for duplication. As a result, our maps are showing wear and tear, I
think because they are not being properly removed and replaced in the
cardboard tubes we are currently using.
We have come up with a few ideas: purchasing some sort of portfolio to
hold the map, purchasing large diameter tubes (8" or larger), enclosing
the map in an open-ended mylar sleeve before rolling it into the tube,
enclosing a sheet of instructions on how to properly treat the map, etc.
Can you share with us any other ideas and procedures that seem to work
for you?
