* as a scientific collector who has never fretted about this, I would
say that "self-collected" just means that the current keeper of the
specimen was the first to enter it into a collection by writing down its
data, even if it had transient movement or handling by someone else. The
alternatives would be "purchased," "exchanged," or "inherited."
