It was such fun to have him as a stalwart of our crowd. He will be so missed, but lovingly remembered.

Subject: Re: [CONCH-L] Harry Lee

What a shock!

There’s so much I could say about Harry. I feel so grateful to him for all his help, encouragement and downright instigation towards my obsession with shells. Grateful, starting with meeting him in 1998 and he gently disabusing me of the notion that in terms of Caribbean mollusks, if it wasn’t in Warmke & Abbott it didn’t exist. And that the names stayed the same for all eternity, etc.

I’ll never forget going on one of those bioblitzes for terrestrials (not my favorite) with him and others. I was not more than 20 feet away from him, both of us rolling over rotting logs. He called out that he’d found his—what, umpteenth, sinistral! I have NEVER found a single sinistral of a normally dextral shell. I swore that he had Velcro for sinistrals on his fingertips! Nevertheless, I picked up more of an interest in collecting terrestrials.

I was in touch with Harry almost daily for over 25 years and I felt personally fortunate that he was so generous with his attention and responses. It’s further testimony to his acumen and capacity to focus to discover that so many on the listserv have benefited similarly from Harry.

There’s a lot more to say about him. Now I know I’m not even remotely alone in that feeling.

Such sad news. Harry always knew the answer or where to find it. I think Paul Callaman’s comment is right on. RIP Harry Lee we all will miss you.

Dear Rich,

You summed it up beautifully. What an honor and privilege it has been for me to have known him. There will never be another Harry. This is truly a sad and dark day for us all. I can’t believe it!

Anne,

My condolences to Kitty, Harry's family, to you and David, and everyone who has had the privilege of knowing and working with Harry over the years.

It would not be too trite to say the conchological and malacological community has lost a giant among us. Harry's knowledge of mollusks, the history of shells, shellers and shell collecting transcends any book or literature within our libraries. . . . Harry was the Google of Conchology. Few if any in contemporary conchology have reached the stature of Harry. He will be sorely missed as a colleague, friend and fellow collector.
