Hi, Alice -

First, you have ALL my spare sympathy! FYI - One of the first duties when I
went to work for my Senator in Washington, D.C., was to prepare the answers to
school kids' mail that usually started with "Dear Sir" or "To whom it may
concern" and more often than not contained no such word as "please". I did
once get a note back from one kid saying thank you! <*_*> I grinned for a
week and my boss was stunned (I think it was the first one he'd ever had!)

I think your strategy of getting a copy of the syllabus is probably a good one,
but I'd also try to find out the full name and other contact information for
the professor. I'd strongly suggest contacting these dudes (no dudette would
ever do this! ;-) and ask them (politely, as you always do things) to let you
know in advance of assignments which involve resources in the Map Library so
that you can prepare properly for the students' visits without disrupting
service to other patrons.

Most professors I know have not ever had any kind of a "professional" service
job so have no idea that people like librarians and computer help desk people
have standards for the quality of service they deliver to their clients, let
alone that preparation can help keep that quality high. (For another chuckle, I
recently sat on a committee at an unnamed institution which was charged with
defining quality of service for a particular organization in the institution.
I deal with QoS very regularly as a computer guy, and the other members of the
committee (including the chair) had no clue as to what it might conceivably be
in their environment!)

HTH.
