for the
Second Int'l Conference on GIS in Education
June 21-23, 2001
San Bernardino, California
Dear Colleague,
Last summer, the first International Conference
on GIS in Education was held at California State
University, San Bernardino. The inaugural
conference was quite successful and attracted
280 participants from 8 countries and 40 states.
CSUSB is pleased to announce plans to host a
second conference this summer, and we invite
you to participate by submitting a proposal for a
presentation. Detailed instructions appear in the
Call for Presentations below. Please share this
with your colleagues, and consider joining us at
this year's conference.

WHO WILL BENEFIT?
- K-12 Educators will benefit from seeing real-life
examples of how GIS can be integrated into grade
specific classrooms.
- College and university faculty from the subject
matter disciplines will see how GIS can open doors
to further research and teaching in their specific
disciplines.
- Education faculty can learn how to train the teachers
of tomorrow in GIS applications in the K-12 classroom.
- Administrators will learn the potential GIS has to
enhance analysis of educational needs, markets
and trends.
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
We encourage you to submit a proposal to make a presentation
at the 2nd International Conference on GIS in Education.
Presentations will be selected through a peer review process.
In developing your proposal, please consider the following
guidelines:
- Presentations should encourage and promote interactive
involvement with the audience.
- Presentations should utilize critical thinking and problem
solving where appropriate.
- The written description you provide will be used as a
marketing method to attract people to your presentation;
a good description clearly conveys what participants can
expect to gain from your presentation and why they should
attend.
Proposals will be selected using the following criteria:
- Quality and completeness of description
- The relevance of content to conference theme
- Application of content to practice
- Explanation of what the participant will gain by
attending your session

Please follow the specific instructions below. Presentations
falling under the following topics will be considered:
- GIS Curriculum Development
- Teaching Science with GIS
- Teaching Social Studies with GIS
- GIS in Libraries
- Applications of GIS
- GIS & Distance Learning
- Administrative Uses of GIS
- Related Technologies

Session Requirements
18. List all audio/visual equipment that you will need,
e.g., overhead projector, 35mm slide projector, TV/VCR,
LCD projector (specify WIN/MAC), internet connectivity,
computer lab.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 28, 2001

Participants who wish to make a presentation must submit
their material no later than March 28, 2001. Participants
with presentations selected for inclusion in the program will
receive a 50% discount off the basic registration fee of $200.
Details on registering for the conference, pre-conference workshops,
and field trips will be included in the April brochure.
