Print/ Digital form: Survey of India could be the possible source,
however the ward level data may be a problem. City level would be
available (1:5000 or lesser). The 1:10000 maps are easily available
(both forms) and they call it Topo maps, available against payment. As
far I remember, its not pricey in terms of Indian Rupees (INR), and
would be peanuts in comparison of USD.
The other source would be cities itself, most of the cities have
completed their digitization. The Municipal Corporations could be
contacted for this, especially ward level data.
The census documents definitely cover such maps (city level), the
alternate source would be university libraries (if the census department
is a problem). The private vendors do have all possible data but would
be problem in terms of sharing / pricing part.
NSDI may have the repositories available, the state level Regional
Remote Sensing Centres / Space Applications Centres would possible have
the data.

Hi,
I'm working with a student who wants the ward boundaries for as many
cities as she can get from the 1991 and 2001 India Census (she already
has the data, just not the boundaries). We have data for a few cities
and I've been in touch with some vendors but this GIS data is really
pricey. The student also said she'd be willing to look at paper maps of
these boundaries and she actually already contacted the census
department in India, but no one seemed to know anything about print
maps, even though they are listed on their website.
Does anyone have suggestions for sources for this data? I'm looking into
both print and electronic.
