Good Morning.

Here's a question for us: A student is wondering about whether they need
to request copyright permission to use satellite images generated by
Excel. They used the 3-D maps function in Excel to create a map and each
map image has "Earthstar Geographics SIO" at the bottom.* "I am wondering
if I am running into an issue of copyright, or if I just need to include a
citation for my map."*

From the current newsletter of the Society for History of Discoveries:

Society for History of Discoveries President-Elect Lydia Towns is currently putting together the Cartography Lab and History Research Center at Stephen F. Austin State University, and to raise funds, she will be selling excess vintage USGS maps at the Annual SHD Meeting.
Most of the maps printings from the 1920s & 30s of surveys completed around the turn of the century. Many of these maps are local to Texas, though many continental United States geographies are represented in the collection. Most of the maps measure 20" x 16.5" and

Hello, all: I have a reference question from an EPA employee working on cleanup of uranium mines in the Navajo Nation, and he seeks airphotos of the area from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Specifically, this centers on the Monument no. 2 uranium mine, Cane Creek, Navajo Nation, which can be found on the 1952 USGS 15-minute Dinnehotso quadrangle. He's interested in the road that they used to haul ore east to Shiprock, New Mexico. Part of that is now U.S. highway 160, but the western section is unpaved back roads that can be seen on the topo maps of

Good morning, dear list,

I am seeking for collective wisdom. Our library is currently processing a
large collection of donated oil and gas paper maps (about 2000, 1950's to
80's), many of which are oversized.

Our preservation librarian strongly recommends against folding and storing
them in drawers, instead suggesting the use of our oversized shelving. As
someone new to managing maps, I would appreciate your advice on the best
practices for handling these materials.

Hello,

I'm a new list member and have a couple of questions that I'm hoping might
be answerable given this group's collective knowledge.

We are in the process of reorganizing our map collection after decades of
neglect (I'm the first librarian with a geography background in recent
memory) and have a few hundred wall maps that no longer get used, but we
hesitate to discard them if we might have a rare edition. We don't have a
geography department or any faculty interested in cartography, so the only
reason to keep them would be for preservation for future scholars.

Good afternoon,

I'm reaching out on behalf of a researcher who is struggling with MODFLOW software (version 10). They are working on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada.

1. Issues importing data
* The researcher has tried several different file types that are accepted (e.g. .dem, .grd) and is receiving errors
2. When data is successfully imported (they have only been able to make .shp contour line files work), there are challenges mapping the data in 3D, and the Z values show as 0
3. I understand there are plugins/extensions that bring MODFLOW into QGIS. If anyone

I am in the process of inventorying a mish-mosh of catalogued and uncatalogued maps and have encountered some 7.5min orthophoto quads mixed in with our USGS 7.5min topos. Our topos are not consistently catalogued but the orthophotos (at least, 15 quads of California) appear to be miscatalogued as part of our 7.5min topos.
In the event that there are a lot more orthophotos, is it worth it to re-catalog these?
For added context, we are in the process of preparing for a library move in the not-too-distant future. Also, cataloging is

Hi everyone,

I've been presented with a creative digital opportunity that requires
several dozen maps. My criteria are that the maps should

• immediately register as having military/conflict-related applications
• be true enough to geographical reality that, with reprojection, they'd
line up with major features on a basemap without too much dissonance;
pre-georeferenced would be a plus
• originate from multiple cultures and cover multiple geographical areas
• be out of copyright/have permissive licensing

Hello,
I am trying to help a professor create a large scale base map of Elyria, OH in the early to mid 1950s. I found 1953 topo quad scans (1:25K) on the USGS site (Avon, Oberlin, Grafton) that cover most of Elyria. The sheet covering the northwest corner of the city that is not there is Lorain. That sheet is available starting in 1960 @ 1:24K. Jan Wagner was kind enough to check the OSU library holdings and they do not have a sheet of Lorain before 1960, so it may not exist.

At the beginning of June, I asked around for a sheet listing or index for the Canadian "Gravity Map Series", published 1961-1978, to help me sort out our incomplete, uncatalogued holdings.
I was pointed to a listing, with scans (jp2/pdf), available online here:
https://ostrnrcan-dostrncan.canada.ca/search?page=1&query=%22gravity%20map%20series%22&spc.sf=dc.date.issued&spc.sd=DESC&spc.page=1&f.itemtype_en=Map,equals
but digging out the sheet numbers (whether the GMS numbers 1-163 or the Canadian NTI numbers) was a slow process. And the Geological Survey of Canada had no record of any index or sheet listing, which makes things tricky for non-Canadians.

Hi all,

I'm working on sharing some scans of older maps on our library's website for a small digital exhibit. I've been asked to provide alt text for accessibility, and I realized that maps are very challenging to write alt text for! I'm finding lots of resources online for born-digital maps, but nothing for older maps that are full of information that is challenging to convey via alt text. Does anyone have advice, examples of what they've done, or reading you'd suggest?

I've looked in the usual places for a digital index for this set. I have yet to master Chris Thiry's fishnet method from scratch without modern coordinates. Hoping someone did it so I don't have to.

We're excited to release "Linked data: The future of library cataloging<https://www.oclc.org/go/en/publications/linked-data-the-future-of-library-cataloging.html?utm_campaign=linked-data&utm_medium=listserv&utm_source=listserv-general&utm_content=listservs-linked-data-position-paper>," a position paper that helps answer the question of why the move to linked data is important for libraries.

The paper follows OCLC's path from decades of linked data research, to experiments and prototypes, the creation of more than 150 million WorldCat Entities, and, most recently, the web application and APIs now available through OCLC Meridian. Earlier this year, OCLC enriched more than 400 million WorldCat records with WorldCat Entities uniform resource identifiers (URIs). We are excited to share the extension of this initiative to routinely enhance WorldCat record quality through the automated addition of WorldCat Entities URIs to WorldCat records.

Here's how it works:

During our ongoing daily process that controls headings in WorldCat bibliographic records to link headings to authority records, this new process automatically inserts the relevant $1 URI link or updates the existing link in $1 (if needed), thus keeping records current and enriched with the latest WorldCat Entities URIs.

The dataset also involves the computation of a new graph-based metric, called GraphGazeD, which is based on the utilization of aggregated gaze behavior data and aims to model visual perception differences. Hi -

Has your library or science agency been challenged with how to address issues related to derogatory names that are found in published maps and books, or in databases or unpublished online resources? If so, I'd very much appreciate learning how you responded to that challenge.

For example:

*
Does your library or science agency redact, or partially redact, derogatory names in all publications managed by your organization?
*
Was that done in the paper copy, in the PDF, or in an image document such as a map?
*
Alternatively, was this issue addressed by appending to the published

PERSUASIVE MAPS ONLINE - AN UPDATE

In collaboration with Cornell University, I've recently added more than 400 maps from my collection to the Persuasive Maps website, https://persuasivemaps.library.cornell.edu/. This is a collection of "persuasive" cartography: maps whose primary intent or effect is to influence opinions or beliefs - to send a message - rather than to communicate geographic information. There are now more than 1200 maps in the online collection, in some 27 languages, dating from 1491 to the present.

There is one proposal that would add $0 (Authority record control number or

This was mentioned briefly on the list a couple of months back but I wanted to emphasise the importance of this report for our sector and beyond. Dr Snow has synthesised a broad range of material into an incredibly useful document and one that will no doubt be valuable for many years to come. The Legal Deposit Map Librarian's Group in the UK will certainly be consulting this regularly.

Hi all,

As presaged in a message in December, I have finally completed indexing our holdings of USGS 24k (and 25k) topos/orthophotos.
Thank you to those who provided feedback at the time.

We have a very incomplete set of these sheets, as the exchange arrangement with USGS, under which this series was received, was cancelled circa 1990 when we began to fully realise how much storage the series would require and how little it actually got used. Our current US 24k holdings occupy about 170 drawers. They are arranged by state, in the same shelf order as the LC G-schedule

Hello all,
I am starting to digitize large format materials. I have a camera set up with lights and a tether to the computer. The previous archivist also purchased Capture One software so I can control the camera from the computer.
I'm running into a few issues.

1. I have lots of maps on semi transparent paper. I think I've figured out that I need a white board behind them. Does anyone have any other suggestions for photographing maps on thin paper?
2. When I turn on the lights from the four side lights, the image looks very washed out.

Good morning all,
I am the archivist for a repository at ASU (not part of the library). I have lots of maps/drawings/sketches of archaeological sites. These are original, hand drawn materials. We are moving buildings and I've been asked to move the maps myself with my student workers. We have trucks so we're fine taking apart and moving the map cases. However, I'm trying to work out how to move the more delicate maps. We moved a stack of smaller cases where I kept the USGS topo maps in the drawers. We had to turn the drawers at a 45

Dear all,

somebody asked me this question and asked me to ask you.

Is the information in OpenStreetMap reliable?

Would it be ok to draw coordinates from OpenStreetMap and put them in the 034 field for place authorities? Could OpenStreetMaps be a recognized source in $$2?

Thank you for your input!

Dear Maps-L subscriber,

Would you have any weeded maps that you could donate for a service project? Any size, type or style would be fine. I would cut the maps into 9 ½ inch squares and create origami frames with messages. The frames would be included in care packages for U.S. service men and women sent by one of these organizations:

I am a relatively new maps/geospatial librarian and I am looking into acquiring a scanner for an aerial photos digitization project. Are there any scanners that you are using that you would recommend for this sort of project?

If it helps, quite a few of the photos have curled over the years and may not be compatible with a top-loading scanner.
