Subject: RE: Charging for GIS services in the library

So far, I have received a number of responses from libraries who charge
for large format printing, but only one response where a university
library was thinking about charging for GIS services. For this reason,
I thought it might be helpful to explain what prompted the thought of
charging. We do not have GIS courses offered anywhere on campus,
although there is some partial coverage of GIS in a geology class. Thus,
we sometimes end up creating maps for students and faculty. Recently, a
visiting professor working on a book mentioned that he had budget for
map preparation as part of his fellowship and he was surprised we did
not charge. Well, we ended up putting in 20-30 hours on his project and
it just made me wonder... should we be charging at least when the maps
will end up as part of a published book or when projects are extremely
time consuming? I look forward to any further input.

Dear MAPS-L Colleagues;

I am wondering if anyone out there has any experience charging for GIS
services. If so, is it an hourly or by the piece rate? How about
charges for printing on the large format plotters? Thanks.
